Blue Max - Aces of The Great War

Blue Max on lentosimulaattoreihin tutustuvalle oiva sijoitus, eivätkä karskit veteraanitkaan tunne itseään hyljeksityiksi. Pisteet puhukoot puolestaan.

1991 KevätHaving ploughed through every jet plane imaginable, the software houses turned their gaze to the First World War and its noisy, slow and clumsy propeller planes. First onto the test bench is Blue Max, dragged straight over from the United States, which has nothing in common with that old C64 game.

This new Blue Max is a flight simulator done in three-dimensional filled vector graphics, in which the player gets to fly on the side of the Allies or the Axis powers. It is even within the realm of possibility to get the Red Baron's red triplane under you. New features compared with other simulators include, for example, the chance for two players to fly at the same time, on the same side or on opposite sides. This has been achieved by shrinking the view of the landscape and splitting the screen in two vertically. Those who don't care for action can sink their teeth into the game's strategy section, in which the player moves squadrons around on a map and the computer handles the dogfights.

There's more, too: eight different aircraft that differ clearly in their flight characteristics. A video recorder function that tapes your flight, which you can 'admire' afterwards from several different camera angles. The multiple in-flight views that are a must in today's flight simulators, 256-colour VGA graphics and sound card support are of course there as well.

Blue Max is crammed so full of functions and menus that it very nearly pops. Things haven't been taken to wild extremes, though; instead the design has (according to the manual, at least) kept the fun of playing in mind the whole time. And they have even succeeded in this. The numerous functions don't get in your way with their complexity during flight, so the player can concentrate wholeheartedly on knocking enemies out of the sky.

You can control the plane with the mouse or a joystick, and you can also choose between realistic and less realistic flight. The player can even choose whether the bullets fly exactly where the crosshairs point or whether you have to be able to judge the lead yourself. If you're used to a full instrument panel, you can bring that up too at the press of a button, but for those after realism, just an airspeed indicator and the crosshairs will do.

The VGA graphics look extremely fine, but they need a powerful PC to be tolerably fast. As for sound cards, the game supports the GameBlaster and the AdLib. Even with the sound cards, though, the game's audio side isn't exactly startling, just a certain amount of engine drone and machine-gun rattle. The PC's beeping isn't even worth talking about.

The versatile and complicated functions and menus may scare off a first-timer, but beneath the cold shell lies a game that thinks warmly of its player. Blue Max is an excellent investment for someone getting to know flight simulators, and the grizzled veterans won't feel left out either. Let the scores speak for themselves.
