Ilkeä Mario-mies on vallannut kaupungin.

Eniten toivomisen varaa on grafiikan suunnitelleen pikseliniekan taidoissa.

1991 KevätProceed to your homes immediately, close all doors and windows and listen to the radio for instructions on the hour. The evil Mario-man has taken over the city. Not that this had anything to do with the plot, mind you, but it does capture the mood when you run into the umpteenth copy of Mario Bros. At least the courtroom isn't looming this time, since nothing is left of the basic idea but a feeling of familiarity tickling your spinal cord.

The idea is simply to scurry from one end of the level to the other, collecting fruit and other bonuses along the way and, above all, the key that fits the last door. The game starts off very non-violently, as the hero hasn't got a single weapon to use. Later on, though, you can scrape together things like time bombs from the shops, with which you can blast hedgehogs and other cute creepy-crawlies sky-high. But don't try this at home, kids, because the hedgehog is a protected animal.

The early levels are so dreary that you have to check the calendar to see which decade we're living in, but later on the game turns more promisingly Mario-like. At least the designers have realised that not everything always has to be force-fed; it can also be left to the player to decide whether to comb the level from top to bottom or head straight for the door.

The most room for improvement lies in the skills of the pixel-smith who designed the graphics. Of course the style is supposed to be childish, but the palette, a muddle of murky blue, poison green and candy red, hurts the eyes, and the hero is a lifelessly drawn little stump-legs that hasn't even been animated properly. The easy-going background plinking suits the game splendidly and there's nothing to complain about in the sounds either; in the title music especially they're really crisp.

Sure, we've seen these before, but a foolproof formula doesn't turn into anything else, no matter how many times you roll it out.
