Curse of Ra, The

1991 KevätOngelmapelit ovat kovasti muodikas ilmiö, varsinkin sellaiset, joissa on palikoita. The Curse of Ra kätkee egyptologisella mystiikalla balsamoidun olemuksensa alle perin yksinkertaisen perusidean. Ruudulla häärää pyhä pillerinpyörittäjä, joka poistaa pareittain hieroglyfeillä koristellut tiilet, hieman samanhenkisesti kuin itämaisilla Mah Jong -palikoilla pelattavassa pasianssissa.

Itikkakuntaan kuuluvalla pikku sankarilla on pari pulmaa.

Pelissä on kaksi versiota samasta ideasta.

Parasta antia on pasianssimaisen rento peliote.

1991 KevätPuzzle games are a very fashionable phenomenon, especially the ones with blocks in them. Beneath its exterior, embalmed in Egyptological mysticism, The Curse of Ra hides a thoroughly simple basic idea. Bustling about the screen is a sacred scarab that removes hieroglyph-decorated tiles in pairs, somewhat in the same spirit as the patience game played with oriental Mah Jong tiles.

Our little hero from the creepy-crawly kingdom has a couple of problems. First, a pair of blocks can only be removed when they are in the same column or row. So the pieces need a bit of rearranging, which in practice works by the beetle hopping aboard and whizzing off somewhere else.

The second problem is that the path has to be kept open and at the end you have to reach the tile marked with the ankh symbol; otherwise there's nothing for it but to wonder and twiddle your chitinous limbs. It's easy to end up in a dead end, since there's no way of telling from the top which pieces can be moved and which are glued to the floor. Complicating the solution are special blocks such as teleports and disappearing platforms.

The game has two versions of the same idea. The simple logic section has a hundred levels in which you can ponder and mull to your heart's content. Its flaw is a slight mechanicalness. The levels don't always even contain any trick; the solution is just thoroughly straightforward shuffling of pieces.

In the action section the game has been made harder in that the scarab can tumble into the void, and a tight time limit is there to torment you. To stop you learning them too quickly, the levels even come in random order. The action game's weakness is that the difficulty has been created with entirely the wrong tricks. In a puzzle game, dying because of one wrong move of the controls is something of a lapse in style.

Ra falls between two stools in that it lacks the spell of Tetris-style games pared down to the bone, but on the other hand it doesn't give the grey matter enough of a workout either. The best thing on offer is a relaxed, patience-like style of play.
