Mad Professor Mariarti
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1991 KevätNo niin lapset, tässä on oikein hassu peli, jossa hassua professoria jahtaavat kaikenlaiset hassut hirviöt. Istuhan hetki aloillasi ja katso kuinka professori hyppää, noiiin, suoraan krokotiilin kitaan. Olipas hassua (napero yrittää ankarasti peitellä haukotustaan).
Mad Professor Mariarti tuo huolestuttavasti mieleen tietyt ikivanhat kuusnelosen pelit.
1991 KevätRight then, children, here's a really funny game where a funny professor is chased by all kinds of funny monsters. Now you sit still for a moment and watch how the professor jumps, theeere we go, straight into the crocodile's jaws. Wasn't that funny (the nipper tries hard to hide a yawn).
Mad Professor Mariarti is worryingly reminiscent of certain ancient Commodore 64 games. In the pioneering days of gaming history it was ever so witty to have cabbages and typewriters toddling about the screen, but nowadays those tricks have, to put it mildly, lost their edge. A laid-back, jovial atmosphere is of course an asset if it's backed up by clever ideas, but frankly MPM is action adventure at its dreariest.
The prof is supposed to shut down the laboratories, which have run amok, by fiddling with sundry levers and using dubious objects in the right spot. And naturally the labs are full of coins, with which you can buy better weapons from vending machines.
I immediately become suspicious if a game's best ideas have to do with comical ways of dying. And the player, it turns out, can do nothing but leap, dodge and chuck spanners (though you do get a proper gun in your little paw too, if you're really diligent). The ideas people ought to learn a thing or two from Bulfrog's Flood. It would also be in order to learn certain rudiments of game dynamics, such as programming a flexible control system, instead of foisting a stiffly bouncing sack of flour on us as the hero.
The looks don't convince either. The backgrounds are in a revolting colouring-book style, the background music grates and the effects are ghastly vintage-1985 'sproing, sproing' clichés. There is one good idea in the game, though: if you don't do anything for a while, the prof polishes the specs and taps on the monitor glass.
MPM is in the same league as the ancient Jet Set Willys, Wallys and their ilk. Maybe you could fiddle away at something like this for want of anything better.
