Flimbo's Quest
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Tämän ansiosta C-64-version pistesaaliiseen on tietysti lisättävä erikoisbonuksia.
1990 SyksyHow about a vision like this: a ghostly desert, dust clouds and sagebrush tumbling across a wide-angle-distorted view, a tracking shot skimming the ground sweeps towards a set of doors that slowly swing open to reveal millions of Nintendo consoles and Super Mario Bros clones stacked in a dim hall. Then you wake from the nightmare, wiping the cold sweat of anguish from your brow.
Basic horizontal platform games are OK in themselves, as long as they aren't churned out onto the market non-stop and they genuinely reach the level of the Marios. Flimbo's Quest is an example of half-successful hopping about, with enough playability but a basic formula that is too monotonous.
Bobbing an oversized cap on his oversized head, Flimbo leaps right and left, collects scrolls and whisks them off to the shopkeeper. From treasure chambers and the remains of critters that strayed into the line of fire you can dig up a few pennies, which are traded for firepower or other little bonuses. From then on the game only gets harder, when what it absolutely needs is more kick in the ideas department.
Flimbo's Quest has a lot in common with Hawkweye, more than just a programming team teeming with Dutch names. In both, the play area is a short stretch of scenery that you scroll back and forth. An even clearer similarity is the layers of background graphics scrolling over one another, found in both the Amiga and the C-64 versions. There isn't much difference between the eight- and sixteen-bit versions anyway: both have showy backgrounds, flawless scrolling and smoothly responsive controls. Thanks to this, the C-64 version's score haul naturally has to get some special bonuses added.
'Easy playing' makes a nice change in between leafing through hundred-page manuals, but the penalty is a short lifespan. After a couple of hours of pumping away I was so numb and dazed that the game no longer interested me one bit.
Let's not be needlessly negative, though, since there are worse games on the market by the hundred. So: an eminently playable basic game, but don't expect too much.
