Treasure Trap

1990 SyksySataluvun ensivuosina loistolaiva Esmeralda tömähti kolmensadan jalan syvyyteen mukanaan kahdenkymmenen miljoonan dollarin arvosta kultaharkkoja.

Joitain hämääviä perspektiiviharhoja lukuunottamatta pelin sarjakuvamainen grafiikka toimii hyvin.

1990 SyksyIn the early nineteen-hundreds the luxury liner Esmeralda thudded down to a depth of three hundred feet, taking twenty million dollars' worth of gold bars with it. No hope of a salvage attempt; the head of the insurance company is tearing out their hairpiece. To the rescue rushes daredevil treasure hunter Howard Kelp, backed up by science's very latest wonder invention: a sealed rubber suit fitted with a metal helmet.

Treasure Trap carries on the long tradition of action adventures played in isometric oblique perspective. The genre is a demanding one, if only because Knight Lore, Head over Heels and other superb classics set the bar high.

The precious-metal bars are spread across an area a hundred rooms in size, naturally in the most awkward places possible. The marine life would gladly dampen Kelp's dreams of striking it rich, and adding to the grief are tricky puzzles whose solutions are at times very peculiar indeed. At worst you have to make a precisely timed jump to a spot whose whereabouts you haven't the foggiest notion of. In rooms a bit too packed with destruction you can slack off a little by letting loose your pet fish, which makes mincemeat of anything that looks remotely hostile.

Saving your game position after every fifty bars is a pleasant touch, since it gives the player room for tactics. Play is also made more comfortable by an easy-to-read map that scrolls in four directions. Owners of extra memory are pampered with a RAM disk, onto which the separately loaded parts are placed in advance.

Apart from a few confusing perspective illusions, the game's cartoony graphics work well. The artist has a sense of style and an eye for colour, too. The sound is fairly limp background noise, but admittedly the hip hop arrangement of Row, row, row your boat is pretty witty.

Treasure Trap adds nothing new to an old-fashioned genre, but at least the programmers have come through their task with top marks and the end result is enjoyable.
