Time Soldier

Kolikkopeli on silti saavuttanut jonkinlaista suosiota, joten tätä ihmiset ilmeisesti haluavat.

1990 SyksyThe evil Gylend has scattered troops all through history, and it falls to hard-as-nails commandos Yohan and Ben to... ugh, what am I even blathering on about. The sole purpose of all this icing is to fool you into thinking the game is something more than a shoot-'em-up with all the flavour of rye bread, one that could barely hold its own even against the ancient Commando.

The execution is so basic you'd be hard pressed to find a more basic basic game. The playfield scrolls vertically and guys come pouring onto the screen, and they, as you may have guessed, get shot. They leave icons on the ground that give you more firepower. Do I need to draw you a picture, or is it starting to sink in yet? In these surroundings the warps placed halfway through the levels stick out like a sore thumb: the player is even allowed to choose where to jump in on the next level.

Of course it isn't the programmers' fault if the original coin-op is thoroughly unimaginative. They have at least done their best to turn the conversion into an acceptably working shoot-'em-up. The movement is a bit jerky, the scrolling dawdles and the graphics somehow taste of paper, but otherwise the ST version can be filed under hard-won victories.

The Commodore 64 version is odd in that, apart from the basic framework, it is a completely different game. Owing to the machine's limitations the enemies turn up on screen only sparsely, and the same goes for the player's bullets. The thing works all the same. Progress has been made more interesting by switching the scrolling direction several times. On the negative side are the separately loaded levels, the needlessly long delays after every keeling-over, and the title music, which whines along horribly off-key.

Both versions are playable basic romps, but the same formula has already been used a quadrillion times. The coin-op has nevertheless achieved some sort of popularity, so apparently this is what people want.
