Where Time Stood Still
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Ah, sivistys sivistys, sinne on päästävä!
Kiitettävä valikoima vaarallisia tilanteita odottaakin seikkailijoita ennen kuin ensimmäinen McDonalds näkyy. Pelaaja ohjaa nelihenkisen joukon yhtä jäsentä muiden seuratessa johtajaa. Jos muuten hiljaa pysyvä aika jättää hänestä, siirtyy seuraava ohjaimiin. Mikäli ryhmän muut jäsenet joko kyllästyvät pomon toimettomuuteen tai eksyvät, alkavat he itsenäisesti hakeutua sivistykseen.
1989 Kevät"Crack and bang!" said the plane as it landed in the middle of a Tibetan mountain range. Once the Pilot, the Heroine, her Boyfriend and the Fat Businessman, the heroine's father, had brushed the bits of aeroplane off their clothes, they realised something was wrong. Dinosaurs, as far as anyone knows, are extinct, and ape-men are usually kept hidden away in pub cloakrooms. Ah, civilisation, civilisation, that's where we have to get to!
A commendable selection of dangerous situations awaits the adventurers before the first McDonalds comes into sight. The player controls one member of the four-strong party while the others follow the leader. Should time, which otherwise keeps quite still, run out on him, the next one takes over the controls. If the other members of the group either get fed up with the boss's idleness or get lost, they start making their own way to civilisation. Objects are handled from a menu brought up with the space bar, but no handy text tells you what the sometimes abstract heaps of pixels are supposed to represent.
WTSS is an excellent isometric adventure game of its kind, and its biggest flaw is that it doesn't try to bring anything new to the genre. All too often you trudge across deserted landscapes with nothing in particular to do, and then time really does stand still. It also grates somewhat that you have to find food and drink for the whole expedition, when the menu doesn't even have an option to butcher the useless members of the party for meat, the way they did in the Andes.
One successful choice in WTSS is ditching garish colours and toning the playing area in different shades of grey. Combined with good animation, the result on the ST looks like a black-and-white portable TV (give or take a little exaggeration). On the Spectrum the shades are limited to two, but otherwise the games are identical.
There haven't been many games of this type on the ST and Amiga, so in that respect WTSS is welcome, especially as it's among the best of the bunch. Still, the mega-machines' beefier kick could be put to use for something other than prettier graphics, but never mind.
