Battlehawks 1942

1989 SyksySiellä se on, amerikkalaisten lentotukialus. Suonissani kohisee veri, siivissäni tuuli kun käännän syöksypommittajani kohti maalia. Kamera päälle! Ilmajarrut auki!

Battlehawks onnistuu tuomaan uusia ulottuvaisuuksia simulaattorimaailmaan.

Nopeus on kuitenkin aivan riittävä suurimman osan aikaa.

Toivottavasti trendi jatkuu.

Paitsi että Battlehawk on raflaavin näkemäni toista maailmansotaa käsittelevä simulaattori on se loistavan pelattavuutensa ja aika ällistyttävän imunsa ansiosta pakko-ostos simuja normaalisti hylkiville pelimiehille. Sano Banzai! Battlehawks! kaupan kiltille myyjäsedälle.

1989 SyksyThere it is, the Americans' aircraft carrier. Blood roars in my veins and wind in my wings as I turn my dive bomber towards the target. Camera on! Air brakes open! And a brilliant drop smack onto the middle of the deck! Could the Battle of Midway be turning into a Japanese victory after all? But... oh woe! I have destroyed the U.S.S Enterprise, and bowed down by this shame I can do nothing but, this evening, quietly press the point of a katana into my belly and pray to Kirk for forgiveness.

As you might vaguely deduce from the name, Battlehawks is set in the battle for mastery of the Pacific. In Battlehawks you can fly as either Japanese or American, in a fighter, a dive bomber or a torpedo bomber. The different nations' planes differ enough from each other that the option is welcome. You don't need to bother with taking off and landing, since the flight always starts in the thick of the action. The pilot's career is saved neatly to disk as the ace picks from a generous number of missions, and you can even practise the different missions.

Battlehawks manages to bring new dimensions to the simulator world. One of the biggest surprises was that the player wasn't a lone wolf: other friendly planes were whirling around in the air as well. This manages to create a deceptive feeling of realism. And best of all: Battlehawks has no dead moments, which makes it dangerously addictive. The manual may look thick, but there's no need to be scared of it: BH is extremely easy to learn.

BH also has a camera. With it you can record the high point of a mission for later viewing. The camera doesn't follow the plane but sort of stays hovering in place, and you can fly it around here, there and everywhere.

Unusually, Battlehawks uses sprite graphics instead of vectors, but with 1500 positions defined for each plane, the end result is at times deceptively realistic. Little touches, like parachutes and planes billowing smoke, improve the impression further. Strangely enough, big clumps of planes slowed the Amiga down really disproportionately, even though this type of graphics should be the wonder machine's special talent. Still, the speed is perfectly adequate most of the time. The Amiga sounds are good, apart from a rather pitiful machine-gun effect, but on the ST the sounds have been tuned to be truly pitiful.

The plane has the usual ability to peek in every direction, plus, as a novelty, a scanning view in which you can spin the view all over the place without your course changing. Extremely handy, and it would be needed in many other sims as well. In the bombers and torpedo planes, the rear view is used to operate the machine gun sticking out backwards.

Battlehawks earns a further plus for being unprotected. So you can make not only backup copies but a hard disk version too. Hopefully the trend continues.

Besides being the flashiest Second World War simulator I've seen, Battlehawk is, thanks to its brilliant playability and pretty astonishing pull, a must-buy for gamers who normally shun sims. Say Banzai! Battlehawks! to the nice man behind the shop counter.
