Super Sprint
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1988Kauan kauan sitten kilpa-ajopelit olivat ylhäältäpäin kuvattuja, ja niissä pikkuiset autot mönkivät ratoja pitkin. Ja vain noin kymmenen vuotta myöhemmin tuli Super Sprint, jossa pienet autot mönkivät ylhäältäpäin kuvattuja ratoja pitkin. Sellaista on kehitys.
Itse asiassa Super Sprint onkin huomattavasti kehittyneempi.
Pelin henki on yksinkertainen: voittaja jää radalle.
Gamestarin On-Track Racing on sitäpaitsi hauskempi.
1988Long, long ago, racing games were viewed from above, and in them tiny cars crawled along tracks. And only about ten years later along came Super Sprint, in which little cars crawl along tracks viewed from above. That's progress for you.
Actually, Super Sprint is a good deal more advanced. There are lots of tracks, as many as eight (so the advert claims; I couldn't find more than four), and two people can drive at the same time. On top of that there are gates that open, bridges that open up and all sorts of junk to pick up off the track for bonus points. Collect three golden spanners and you can fit extra features to your car. In the arcade version the graphics are pretty, of course, and the game is fun too, so it's no wonder Sähköunelmat knocked out a home computer version of it.
But this formula ended up in the ditch. The original, after all, has a big screen, lots of different colours and a sharp resolution, not to mention steering-wheel control. The Commodore 64 has 16 colours and a 160x200 resolution. Because of this Super Sprint doesn't really look good, with even the cars being rather blurry heaps of pixels, and a steering wheel will always be a steering wheel, not a joystick.
The game itself is fairly amusing all the same, but it needs two players, because otherwise you won't have to wait long for boredom to set in. Playing solo, you do at least get to take on the first four tracks in whatever order you like. There are no sound effects, but the simple music does its best to annoy the poor player. The spirit of the game is simple: winner stays on the track.
Super Sprint isn't a bad game, but it should have been released as a budget title, because the ingredients don't stretch to a hundred-and-twenty-mark game. Gamestar's On-Track Racing is more fun, besides.
