Pyramax

1990 SyksySokkeloita, pyramideja, mystisiä kristalleita. Alkaa kummastuttaa, että mistähän kollektiivisen alitajunnan syövereistä nämä pelien kliseet oikein ammennetaan? Tällä kertaa sankarina on Max Danger, pääjalkaisten lahkoon kuuluva vihreä paukura, ja pyramidin nimi Thaal.

Thaal on ylhäältä kuvattu sokkelo, jonka tasot on rakennettu kuuden huoneen levyisistä ja korkuisista ruudukoista. Selvittääkseen kerroksen Maxin on kosketettava neliömäistä mötikkää jokaisessa huoneessa.

Pelin hermoja lepuuttavin yksityiskohta on mahdollisuus jatkaa viimeksi tavoitetulta tasolta. Ilman sitä pelaaminen tuskin pitkään kiinnostaisi, sillä jo ykköstason selvittäminen on melkoisen uuvuttava operaatio. Kakkostason pelaaminen vaatiikin jo tiettyjä perversejä luonteenpiirteitä.

Pyramax ei aiheuta reaktiota suuntaan tahi toiseen. Kuitenkin ihmeen kauan sitä jaksaa veivata, vaikka se onkin aika tekopirteää, mukamas omaperäistä, nippa nappa pelattavaa, melkoisen rasittavaa perusmössöä.

1990 SyksyMazes, pyramids, mystic crystals. You start to wonder from which depths of the collective unconscious these game clichés are actually being dredged up. This time the hero is Max Danger, a green lump belonging to the cephalopod order, and the pyramid is called Thaal.

Thaal is a maze viewed from above, whose levels are built from grids six rooms wide and six rooms high. To clear a floor Max has to touch a square lump in every room. For cannon fodder there are crawlers, which keep pushing onto the screen out of the walls and floor hatches, plus destructible cubes, which also cough up all sorts of bonuses: energy, extra lives and that sort of thing.

That's it in a nutshell; the rest is the usual little fluff that every game without exception gets crammed full of. Max isn't given much of a chance of survival, since after even a short stay in a room it's packed to bursting with crawling, sliding, slithering and creeping creatures. There's no point even trying to keep the route clear with an unimpressive stub of a laser that puts out about as many gigaergs as a cigarette lighter. Playing is a peculiar kind of pumping back and forth from one room to the next: loose off a couple of shots from the doorway and then run for it, fast. Once the route is clear, you charge over to the touchstone with smart bombs booming and shields glowing.

The most nerve-soothing detail in the game is the option to continue from the last level reached. Without it playing would hardly hold your interest for long, since clearing even level one is a pretty exhausting operation. Playing level two, then, already calls for certain perverse character traits.

Pyramax provokes no reaction one way or the other. Yet you find the stamina to crank away at it for a surprisingly long time, even though it's pretty fake-cheerful, supposedly original, barely playable, rather wearing run-of-the-mill mush.
