Photon Storm

1990 SyksyJeff Minter, kuka ihmeen Jeff Minter?

Pelaajalla on vapaasti avaruudessa leijuva hiiriohjattava alus, jonka laserit sylkevät sädekimppuja kolmeen suuntaan.

Photon Storm on täynnä näppäriä pikku oivalluksia.

Peli on kuitenkin omalla tavallaan kiehtova aikamatka tietokonepelien juurille.

1990 SyksyJeff Minter, who on earth is Jeff Minter? Joking aside, everyone knows Jeff, or at least they ought to. He was an internationally known game maker back when the Vic 20 was the hottest gaming machine on the market. Nearly ten years have rolled by, but he still has the energy to make games, and he hasn't changed his style in any direction either.

In the view of Minter, your basic hippie, a game has to have a screenful of aggressive action; everything else is irrelevant. Photon Storm, a sort of psychedelicised version of Stargate, fits naturally into this formula too.

The player has a mouse-controlled ship floating freely in space, whose lasers spit out bundles of beams in three directions. The task is simply to clear the level and then leap through a gate resembling the Llamasoft logo into the next one. Extra bonuses are earned by collecting plutonium, which the enemy is trying to haul off as building material for a battle station. If you don't stand your ground, the enemy activates a horrific death star that tries to turn the hero into a cloud of gas, and usually succeeds.

Photon Storm is full of neat little touches. Firing and movement are aimed separately, between levels there's a tunnel sequence spiced up with a beautiful warp effect, and the radar changes its magnification automatically until enemies show up on it. But the most essential thing is the stripped-down action, which has the same nostalgic spirit as the excellent Datastorm. Just what you'd expect from Minter: breathtaking speed, explosions made of colourful dot patterns and other surreal effects, and even the sound effects are like echoes from the past.

A generation of players spoilt by today's big-budget productions won't necessarily like Minter's style. In its own way, though, the game is a fascinating trip back in time to the roots of computer games.
