Operation Stealth

Hintana on kuitenkin karkeampi ulkoasu.

OS näyttää huolestuttavasti valokopiolta Sierran seikkailutehtaalla rutiinilla kokoon pultatusta tuotteesta. Mutta eiköhän Delphinestä vielä tule vakavasti otettava kilpailija jenkkiläisille, kunhan eivät sorru pintapuoliseen matkimiseen.

1990 SyksyCrafty, these military strategists. The public was shown a useless prototype, and meanwhile the real Stealth fighter was kept carefully out of sight, until one starry night it took wing and slipped off to other parts. Untangling the mess calls for the government's top agent, whose businesslike businessman look conceals a briefcase fitted with a passport forger and a self-destruct mechanism, a wristwatch that fires out climbing cables, rocket-launching cigarettes and other ingeniously disguised high technology. Sounds awfully Bond-ish, but the hero's name is in fact Glames, John Glames.

Operation Stealth is Delphine's second graphic adventure, and it uses the same system as Future Wars, which hopped about wildly in time and space. Since we last saw it, the user interface has been improved somewhat in the direction of Sierra and Lucasfilm. The menu offers 'operate', 'take', 'speak' and other pithy commands, and you can now also examine and handle the items you are carrying, which couldn't be done in Future Wars. Another improvement is that you no longer have to put up with 'come a little closer' remarks when you aren't standing on exactly the right pixel; instead the hero toddles over to the object or person automatically.

The game is bigger and more varied than its predecessor, and gone too are Future Wars' miniature postcard-sized pictures and the hunt for pixel-sized objects. In their place come big, clear graphics and more logic-based puzzles. The price, however, is a cruder look. The backgrounds look rather slapdash in places, and the music isn't very impressive either. I was also a little irked by the in-jokey 'humour' and a few clumsy bits of language. Nor does the game fire the imagination with the same intensity as Future Wars.

OS looks worryingly like a photocopy of a product bolted together by rote at Sierra's adventure factory. But surely Delphine will yet become a rival for the Yanks to be taken seriously, as long as they don't stoop to superficial imitation.
