Future Wars

Käytössä on Lucasfilmin tyyliin joukko pelkistettyjä komentoja, joiden merkitys riippuu asiayhteydestä.

1990 KevätFrance's Delphine Software throws itself energetically into the battle for the crown of graphic adventure games. This, of course, has been Sierra's and Lucasfilm's very own turf, but Future Wars shows that they know how to do it in Europe too.

Today's adventure games no longer settle for old-fashioned "find ten treasures"-style set-ups; instead, the most important element is the plot. I can well imagine FW's designers rubbing their hands with glee and muttering "we'll wipe the floor with 'em".

The game's hero is a perfectly ordinary window washer who dangles at the risk of life and limb on the sides of skyscrapers. But you wouldn't believe everything that can happen when you get too curious. Revealing the plot would spoil the enjoyment of the game, but let it be said that in the distant future mankind is at war with the cruel Crughons. The wars of the future are fought in the past, for what could be a more crooked way of pulling a prank on your opponent than tampering with history. It is into this mess, which breaks the boundaries of time and space, that the player gets swept.

Paul Cuisset's three-year project has spawned an easy-to-use and logically working graphical system, in which the character moves convincingly within the pictures and the mouse control works with pixel precision. Lucasfilm-style, there's a set of pared-down commands whose meaning depends on the context. The game's problems are clever and suitably connected to the course of the plot, but the worst flaw is the lack of things to do. I myself got so utterly stuck in a certain sewer that either there's something wrong with the game or between my ears, or else I've been sent an unfinished review copy.

The game's high-quality graphics, and the sound effects and music mixed to accompany the action, make the game's Cinematique trademark live up to its name. The storytelling has a humorous touch and the plot twists are so high-flying that the game sucks you in whether you like it or not. If you like Zak McKraken or Sierra's games, Future Wars is worth getting to know.
