1990 SyksyLoistava menestys!
Korkeuden ollessa alle kaksi metriä, kuulin miten joku mokkereista huudahti yllättyneenä: "Se ääliö on unohtanut laskutelineet ylös!". Totta kai!
Yksi ratkaisu on tietenkin pelata peliä vaikkapa EGA-moodissa, jolloin koneen taakka on kevyempi. Lisäksi valikoista saa muokattua maiseman yksityiskohtaisuuden koneen teholle sopivaksi.
1990 SyksyA brilliant success! I went to pick up a few grunts stuck behind the lines in my Osprey, and the chopper didn't get so much as a scratch, even though a Mi-24 Hind hung around it like a blowfly round a week-old dog carcass. Just try flying under two metres off the ground and picking men up with that going on.
The flight back was peaceful... at least until we got to the home base. I thought I'd impress the grunts by flying fast right down at ground level, stopping right above the pad and making a perfect landing. But you know how not everything always goes the way it was planned. The low-level flight and the sudden stop in exactly the right place went off perfectly, but as I cut the power from the engines, some little thing began nagging at the back of my head, loudly demanding my attention.
With the altitude under two metres, I heard one of the grunts cry out in surprise: "The idiot's left the landing gear up!". Of course! The Osprey has landing gear that can be retracted to increase speed. Faster than thought, my hand flew towards the gear switch, but the altimeter sensed my intention and dispatched the last few dozen centimetres in record time. All that was left was a heap of smoke-blackened metal, which not even with the best will in the world could anyone picture as the Pelikopteri.
In LHX the pilot can choose from four choppers and three different combat zones, each of which has around 15 missions. On top of that, every mission comes in a couple of different variations. When you then multiply all that by five different difficulty levels, the player really is spoilt for choice. The difficulty has, however, been tuned a little high, or should I say realistic, because even the "very easy" level is really hard and demands total concentration and some degree of knowledge of helicopter warfare strategy.
If you compare LHX with other helicopter simulators, you have to say that LHX wins hands down. MicroProse's Gunship has just one feature you'd wish this one had as well. Namely, a pilot roster. It's really frustrating to fly with one and the same man all the time, when you can't create a character now and then to use, say, for showing the game off to your mates.
LHX contains four different choppers. Each suits particular kinds of missions, so it's important to know how to pick the right chopper. For example, it's suicide to set off on a mission that calls for firepower in the slow and old-fashioned Black Hawk, which is a troop-transport chopper. The Apache, familiar from Gunship, is a metal clunker frosted with weapon systems that can take punishment for a long time. The Black Hawk is a transport chopper of old stock that isn't much good for anything else anyway. The Osprey is a tilt-engine chopper-plane that's at its best on rescue missions, but when needed it has speed and firepower too. The newest of the choppers is the LHX (Light Helicopter Xperimental) that gives the game its name, a light, single-seat, tail-rotorless and fast reconnaissance chopper.
Not many compromises have been made on the graphics front, since each chopper has its own characteristics, such as a clearly recognisable shape, realistic instruments and performance. Looking out from the cockpit, the landscape distorts superbly towards the edges of the screen, and no details have been skimped on. The game's visual presentation clearly betrays that its programmer's previous project was DeLuxe Paint for the PC.
Unfortunately the graphics aren't exactly the fastest. In VGA and MCGA modes, updating the screen is such a laborious project that on any box slower than a 386 there's not much hope of getting a tolerable speed. One solution is of course to play the game in, say, EGA mode, which lightens the machine's load. You can also adjust the landscape detail from the menus to suit your machine's power.
Nobody can be bothered to listen to the squeaking of an ordinary PC any more, and there's no reason not to get a sound card, as you can already get them in Finland at quite reasonable prices. LHX supports the most popular cards, and the sound of a PC with a card is manna to the ears. The swish of the rotor blades sounds pretty authentic, but the explosions are the real treat. The intro music is quite a cacophony, admittedly, but then nobody makes you listen to it.
As for playability, suffice it to say that, confusingly enough, the game is best played from the keyboard. Fumbling about with a joystick and mouse is such a vague business that you'll smash more than several choppers to pieces while practising. The manual runs to a good hundred-odd pages, but less than half of it is text you actually need. There aren't too many keys to learn, and thank God they've been put in logical places too.
LHX Attack Chopper represents the pinnacle of flight simulators in every respect. If the game could also get a pilot roster and more variety in the missions, it would rank among the five best games of all time.
