Krypton Egg
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Graafisesti Krypton Egg on kekseliäs, vaikkei nousekaan Arkanoidien tasolle.
1990 SyksyWhen game ideas start running out, there's nothing for it but to concentrate on making the old games again, and better. So the Krypton Egg programmers have reasoned, and as a result the gaming public once again gets to admire a new Arkanoid clone. Luckily KE at least rises easily above this dense throng.
In Arkanoid the aim was to keep the ball on the screen and break as many 'bricks' as possible with it. Now and then a breaking brick dropped various bonuses into the player's hands, such as extra balls or laser weapons. The ball could only escape through the bottom of the screen, and the player tried to stop it by steering a little block.
At first KE doesn't arouse any particular interest. But when the bonuses start dropping, the old Arkanoid veteran's eyes grow round. Whereas its predecessor was mainly about bouncing the ball around, in KE the various bonuses and extra weapons rise to an important position. Anyone who has played Arkanoid will whoop with excitement while collecting bonuses each stranger than the last.
Instead of two or three balls, at best there can be twenty or so balls in play. The size of the ball or balls can grow from a couple of pixels to a couple of centimetres. Sometimes the player gets to move anywhere on the screen. There's also a whole host of different weaponry, from an ordinary gun to a megalaser.
Besides the bonuses, a special feature of KE is the 'end-of-level-monster' you run into every tenth level, which looks like something straight out of a middling shoot-'em-up. Unusual among representatives of this game type.
Graphically Krypton Egg is inventive, although it doesn't rise to the level of the Arkanoids. The screens are colourful and the effects interesting-looking, but nothing gives you any particular thrill. The sound doesn't blow even the smallest of minds, but stays middling.
Krypton Egg is a good choice for anyone who liked Arkanoid or some other Break-out, with the unusual bonuses guaranteeing your interest for at least a couple of hours. Egg is also enough easier that you might even get through all the levels some day.
