Arkanoid

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Arkanoid

1987An old idea is better than a dozen new ones. Imagine's latest action-game twist traces its roots back to an ancient relic called Breakout, which is probably one of the first ten computer games in the world.

Since not everybody will necessarily have even heard of Breakout, let's go over it a little. The gist of the thing is to bounce a ball, using a bat that moves sideways along the bottom of the screen, against a brick wall at the top of the screen. The bricks crumble when the ball hits them, and once you've destroyed all the bricks you get to go and batter the next wall.

In Arkanoid the bat's job is done by a spaceship, and that ball-looking gadget is actually an energy bolt. The walls are more imaginatively shaped than in the original, although the first two screens, with their old-fashioned layouts, try to bore the player to death. As extras there are also a few aliens, who are mostly just in the way, and a set of energy capsules hidden under the bricks, which make playing easier in various ways.

The program's problem is the controls. The joystick doesn't really give enough precision, and even if the program does work with the Neos mouse, Geos is a lot more common these days. On top of that, there's no way at all to either quit or pause the game.
