1990 SyksyJos pelifirman nimenä on kolmikirjaiminen lyhenne, se on melko varmasti erikoistunut strategiapeleihin: SSI, PSS ja SSG. Australialaisen Strategic Studies Groupin uutuus yrittää vaihteeksi kosiskella ostajakuntaa suppean mutta uskollisen strategistipiirin ulkopuolelta.
GOA kertoilee keskiajalla alkaneesta Amerikan mantereen valloituksesta. Tulimaan kärjestä Kanadaan ulottuvan jättimäisen alueen herrudesta kilpailevat Ranskan, Englannin, Espanjan ja Portugalin joukot. Mittakaava on laaja myös ajallisesti, sillä jokainen siirto kattaa kymmenen vuoden tapahtumat.
Tarkoituksena on rohmuta mahdollisimman paljon siirtomaita kolmessa vuosisadassa ja siinä sivussa tuhotaan julmasti uuden mantereen intiaanikulttuurit. Ensiksi lähetetään tutkimusmatkailijoita paikkaamaan kartan valkoisia läskiä. Sitten neitseellisille alueille voikin pestata seikkailunhaluista väkeä rakentamaan uusia valtakuntia.
1990 SyksyIf a games company's name is a three-letter abbreviation, it's pretty much bound to specialise in strategy games: SSI, PSS and SSG. The new release from Australia's Strategic Studies Group tries, for a change, to woo buyers from outside the small but loyal circle of strategists.
GOA tells the tale of the conquest of the American continent that began in the Middle Ages. The forces of France, England, Spain and Portugal compete for mastery of a gigantic territory stretching from the tip of Tierra del Fuego to Canada. The scale is broad in time as well, since every move covers ten years' worth of events.
The idea is to grab as many colonies as possible in three centuries, cruelly destroying the Indian cultures of the new continent along the way. First you send out explorers to patch up the white blotches on the map. Then you can hire adventurous folk to build new realms in the virgin territories.
To build up your gold reserves you have to acquire a large merchant fleet and exploit the new colonies, whether by plundering them, developing them or bribing officials. Motivation is certainly not helped by the king's piggish greed. The tax rate seems to average a cool 120 per cent. The king's displeasure, in turn, means that the amount of free troops and equipment dwindles each time round. The only way to avoid the poverty trap is to squirrel pennies away into a secret fund.
The threshold for getting started is certainly not too high, since everything works by mouse control and there are plenty of illustrative pictures livening up the status reports. But you don't get particularly excited about the game, and what little enthusiasm there is fades after a few attempts. Operating over a continent-sized area is very crude, and the options are too limited and too rough-and-ready. Far too large a share of what happens in the game is stuff you can't influence in any way. For example, you can't count on anything when it comes to enemy and ally relations, since the whole set-up can be turned on its head as soon as the very next move.
GOA is a super-easy, quickly played strategic snack suitable for beginners. It's just that it looks a bit too much like a mediocre board game that has been robbed of the thrill of rolling the dice.
