GOZ on aivan normaali laserinkatkuinen tuhoamispeli, jossa pikkuinen avaruusalus matelee omalaatuisten maisemien seassa silpoen kaiken tielleen osuvan. Ase on todellakin laser, josta lähtee koko ruudun mittainen energialataus, eikä mikään pikseliklönttejä sylkevä leikkipyssy. Pitämällä tulitusnäppäin pohjassa ja liikkumalla samalla pystysuunnassa on helppo pyyhkiä reitti puhtaaksi. Lisäksi aseistukseen kuuluu ballistisesti alaviistoon liitäviä fotonitorpedoita, joiden laukaisua varten sormi on välillä nostettava napilta.
Pelin suunnittelijoiden mielikuvitus on riittänyt muuhunkin kuin tavanomaiseen 'laitetaan nyt jotain ruudulle lentelemään' -perusratkaisuun. Laserin ateriaksi tarjoiltavien lima- ja robottiolioiden muotomaailmaan kuuluu kaikkea mahdollista poukkoilevista silmämunista jättimeduusoihin ja Asteroidsin tyyliin pilkottaviin järkäleisiin.
Seuraavalle tasolle siirrytään teleporteilla, joita löytyy yleensä enemmän kuin yksi. Pelissä voikin edetä lukemattomia eri reittejä jättäen väliin erityisesti inhoamansa tasot. Kun tämän päälle peliin on vielä laitettu salasanat, tuloksena on todella pelaajaystävällinen tuote, jonka parissa on vaikea pitkästyä.
1990 SyksyThe Lynx is such a stylish, sleek and charming device that any game at all sucks you into hours of button-bashing. But on top of that, Gates of Zendocon is a really good shoot-'em-up, whatever criteria you measure it by.
GOZ is a perfectly normal laser-reeking destruction game in which a teeny spaceship creeps through peculiar landscapes, carving up everything that crosses its path. The weapon really is a laser, firing off an energy charge the full width of the screen, and not some toy gun spitting out clumps of pixels. By holding the fire button down and moving up and down at the same time, it's easy to sweep the route clean. The armament also includes photon torpedoes that glide ballistically down at an angle, and to launch them you have to lift your finger off the button every now and then.
The designers' imagination has stretched to more than the usual basic 'let's just put something on screen to fly around' approach. The slime and robot creatures served up as meals for the laser come in every conceivable shape, from bouncing eyeballs to giant jellyfish and boulders that get chopped up Asteroids-style.
You move on to the next level through teleports, of which there is usually more than one. So you can progress through the game by countless different routes, skipping the levels you particularly loathe. And when passwords have been thrown in on top of that, the result is a truly player-friendly product that it's hard to get bored with.
