Flood
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1990 SyksyOlet paksu vihreä möykky, mutta älä välitä. Niin on Quiffykin. Toisaalta Quiffy on sentään sankari Populousin tekijöiden Bullfrogin toimintapelissä.
Quiffy lajitovereineen asustaa maanalaisissa luolissa, eläen muinaisten sivilisaatioiden roskilla.
Hirviöiden poistamiseen Quiffyllä on keinonsa. Eli kuppauksen tulos on henki ulos.
Ensinäkemältä Floodin grafiikka tuo mieleen sellaisen cute-klassikon kuin New Zealand Storyn. Paitsi ettei NZS:n halinalleilla ollut hampaita vatsassa eikä taustagrafiikasta löytynyt partakoneenterällä halkaistuja silmämunia, puhumattakaan osittain maatuneista Quiffyn sukulaisista, joita on ripustettu seipäisiin.
1990 SyksyYou are a fat green blob, but never mind. So is Quiffy. Then again, Quiffy does at least get to be the hero of an action game by Bullfrog, the makers of Populous.
Quiffy and fellow blobs live in underground caves, getting by on the rubbish of ancient civilisations. But then assorted nasty creatures decided that the age of green blobs was over and wiped out the entire blob clan, except for Quiffy. As if that weren't enough, the Taps of Wrath were turned on and now the caves are filling up with water. Quiffy decided to make a run for it.
The aim in Flood is to get through 36+6 caves by collecting all the rubbish in them and finally dashing into the teleporter. The task is made harder by the rising flood water (like Kiwi, Quiffy can dive for a while) and the monsters crawling about all over the place. Quiffy has three lives plus an energy meter and an oxygen meter.
Quiffy has ways of getting rid of the monsters. There's a boomerang, shuriken, hand grenades, dynamite bombs fitted with time fuses and a really heavy-duty flamethrower. This fun weapon does have one downside, though: when you yell "fry, you stupid creature" and press fire, instead of a pillar of flame you may find a clucking rubber chicken in your hand. Nothing helps, however, against the ghost of Quiffy's aunt, which follows Quiffy's movements ten seconds behind but slowly gains ground all the same. In other words, dawdle and you're done for.
On top of all this the caves have teleporters that zap you from place to place, power potions, balloons, space hoppers, parachutes, lakes of fire, force fields, mines, flood stoppers (and flood speeders) and so on, with the result that there's fun aplenty. As well as walking, jumping and diving, Quiffy can also walk on walls and ceilings like Spider-Man.
The wearisome trudge through the same levels again and again is eased by a password system (assuming you find it: the words are invariably hidden in secret caves whose entrances you only find by sheer luck). A player who owns a brain should manage to work out a few, mind you (my own record: 15 words in two hours).
At first glance Flood's graphics call to mind a cute classic such as New Zealand Story. Except that NZS's cuddly teddies didn't have teeth in their bellies, and the background graphics didn't feature eyeballs split with a razor blade, not to mention partly decomposed relatives of Quiffy hung up on stakes. The sound effects are truly brilliant and, best of all, there's no stupid background music of any kind to fray your nerves. The ST version has push-scrolling and thinner sound than the Amiga, but they hardly affect the playability.
Flood has a flood of creative thinking, clever details, playability, playability, and floating on top of the flood is a quirky sense of humour. Probably the year's best example of its genre, and another win for Bullfrog.
