1990 SyksyKun ihmiskunta 3000-luvulla vihdoin onnistuu koskettamaan tähtiä, joku muukalaisrotu on heti kiusanteossa.

1990 SyksyWhen mankind finally manages to touch the stars in the 3000s, some alien race immediately starts making trouble. This time the trumpets of doom are sounding at the vital space communications relay station 9W/4.

The intruders are green creepy-crawlies breeding at an alarming rate, which go through a rapid metamorphosis from grub to biped and systematically destroy every one of the station's systems. The player's job is to keep the station in working order and, while at it, send the aliens packing. At least that's what I'd assume, since oddly enough the instructions say next to nothing about the aim of the game. Besides the station, the game is supposed to contain the aliens' ship as well, so I suppose that's where you're headed.

At the player's disposal is a remote-controlled, three-part maintenance droid whose head, arms and legs can scurry along the corridors together or separately. The four floors of the station, seen from above, hold kilometres of control panels from which even the smallest system can be checked and, if need be, repaired. There are at least as many wall lockers to rummage through for extra equipment. All the droid parts are armed as well, but some alien forms are not much bothered by being tickled with a laser.

At first the sheer gigantic scale of the task has a badly demoralising effect: you have barely got going before a report of mission failure is slapped up on the screen. Playing FC purely as an action game is pretty hopeless, then; you need a more strategic approach. Salvation lies in programming the droids. With a sort of program editor you can define long sequences of actions for all the body parts in advance; for example, you can move them to the other end of the floor with one single command.

The programming system itself is easy to pick up, but the editor is badly designed. If you want to change column in the menu, you first have to scroll up to the top row. The editor is handy in that it automatically works out the shortest route. Except that sometimes it goes haywire. One time I wanted the droid to move to the next square, but the program picked an insane detour for it.

To look at, a couple of the floors are quite stylish, but the overall look is monotonous and there isn't even any scrolling. The sound doesn't even bear mentioning. The instruction booklet takes an interestingly 'scientific' approach, but things could be put more clearly.

FC is a peculiar cross-breed of action and strategy with plenty to get your teeth into, as long as a few design flaws don't drive you up the wall.
