E-motion

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

E-motion

1990 SyksyHiukkasfysiikan vallaton veijari, itse Albert E., on tempaistu suhteellisuusteorian tuolta puolen edistämään E-Motionin myyntiä.

1990 SyksyThat unruly rascal of particle physics, Albert E. himself, has been whisked from the far side of the theory of relativity to boost sales of E-Motion.

Those who count on their fingers needn't panic, though, since E-motion's game idea is deceptively simple. The game is like billiards in which, instead of swinging a cue about, you steer the ball directly. The balls living on the playfield have to be nudged together, while taking care, mind you, that their colours are the same.

When balls of different colours meet, the same thing happens as to a careless holidaymaker down south: new balls are born. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, since by collecting a ball still at the larval stage you can pick up extra energy. Unfortunately the balls' childhood is very short, and before long the playfield may well be full of cheerfully coloured ball populations. A pity, since you only get to the next level once the playfield has been scraped clean.

Nor is there any time to waste, since little by little the balls go critical and explode. A ship with full energy can take one wallop, mind you. The real laughs come from the obstacles on the playfield and especially from the fact that the balls are often tied with a rubber band either to each other or to the player's ship. And what fun that makes, as anyone can imagine for themselves. The fun is dented by having to start the game from the very beginning every time, but to balance that there's a two-player option.

The ST-Amiga graphics are a spartan but fit-for-purpose attempt at raytracing. The balls move and the rubber bands work just as they should. On the Commodore 64 the colour coding has been replaced by symbols, and sadly neither the movement of the balls nor the playability is up to the big brothers' standard.

Apart from a password option, something indefinable is missing from E-Motion, but after the millionth essentially identical jump-shoot-collect game and the quadrillionth horizontally or vertically scrolling shoot-'em-up, modest games like E-motion that actually contain an idea taste remarkably good.
