Dragon's Breath

Klikkaamalla palloa saa kuvan Anreasta ylhäältäpäin katsottuna.

DB on toteutettu lähes kokonaan ikoniohjauksella, mikä onkin paras mahdollinen vaihtoehto tämäntyyliseen peliin.

1990 SyksyIn the middle of the beautiful kingdom of Anrea stands the mighty Dwarf Mountain, which since the dawn of time has been a nest of evil. Otherwise all would be well, but according to legend the secret of immortality can be found in the throne room of Dwarf Castle. Nothing much in that either, but when getting into Dwarf Castle means collecting the pieces of the Talisman scattered around the land, which most likely lie right on enemy territory, then war is bound to break out. And what could be a better weapon than a good dragon? The idea of Dragon's Breath is a tad conventional, but the game itself, on the other hand, is not.

Dragon's Breath can be played by one to three players at the same time. If you make all the characters computer-controlled, you can watch the game without doing anything, but a better option is to wait a while on the title screen, whereupon you get to see (according to the instructions, at least) a proper demo.

After choosing your character and getting past the password check, you finally get your hands on the game itself. The first screen shows pictures of all three players, along with save-game, load-game and quit icons and a picture of an hourglass. Selecting one of the characters brings up a picture of that person's castle, seasoned with suitable background music and a pile of new icons. From this screen the player can give battle orders, check the condition of their dragons, incubate dragon eggs, check their accounts, cast spells, buy magic items or exit to the first menu.

Clicking on the globe gives you a view of Anrea from above. You can zoom in on any spot you like into a map-like view, where you can see the names of all the villages, their populations and, if you want, an enlarged picture as well. If you so wish, you can send a dragon either on a terrorist strike or to conquer some village. From this screen you also get into the only action-style part of the whole game, by sending your drake off on a training mission.

Selecting the dragon's eye from the main menu lets you check the damage all eight of your dragons have taken in battle, as well as their attributes, such as intelligence, eyesight and whatnot. The next icon brings up a new menu, in which the player puts as many eggs as they like into the incubating machine and sets the boiling time. The shorter the boiling time, the sooner the dragon hatches, but the weaker it turns out. A longer boiling time, correspondingly, produces a stronger critter.

Clicking the book in the main menu with the mouse brings up yet another new screen. In the books you can check your accounts, bills, funds and other tax-related matters, read the latest news and snoop out how many magic potions you have. If your concoctions run out, you can buy more from a merchant outside the castle. DB also has a magic system that is hard to explain but easy to grasp. A potion is mixed by sloshing various substances from the laboratory shelf through a weird contraption into a cup at the end of the piping. Along the way the ingredients can be mixed, cut, mashed, heated and cooled. Every step affects the end result, which may even be the whole apparatus getting wrecked.

Once every player has made their moves, you go to the first screen, where you choose the hourglass option. After that you settle comfortably into your chair and watch what has happened over the past month. The screen shows the dragons' attacks on villages, any eggs that may have hatched and the rewards offered by the villages.

DB is controlled almost entirely with icons, which is indeed the best possible option for a game of this style. Playing is easy and flexible, although the frequent loading from disk gums up the flow of the game. Even using extra memory doesn't seem to help matters much. The music is a bit on the dry side, but you'd still rather listen to it than turn the sound off. As for the graphics, suffice it to say that they're highly functional and of good quality, the sort you enjoy looking at.

Despite its simplicity, DB is a game that gives anything from a couple of hours to many weeks of fun, depending on the person. Flames, flying, dragons, magic, good graphics and a middling game - that's what Dragon's Breath contains. So, something for everyone, but not much for any one person.
