AD & D: Dragonstrike

1990 SyksyMusta lohikäärme kello kahdessa! Eipä olisi kauaa mikäli siiven alla roikkuisi Sidewinder, mutta täytynee pärjätä Dragonlancella. Kantomatka on valitettavasti muutama metri, joten Tally-Ho!, Sirdar! Flap Flap Flappety Flap. Dragonlance kohtaa mustan lohikäärmeen mahan kuolettavin seurauksin. Törmäyksessä kuitenkin suistun ratsuni selästä. 'Siiirdaaar! Koppiiiii!' Ja Sirdar onnistuu. Tehtävä päättyy voitonsilmukkaan.

Krynniin matopitoiseen maailmaan sijoittuu AD&D-peleistä uusin ja erikoisin. Dragonstrike on ilmeisesti maailman ensimmäinen lohikäärmelentosimulaattori, vaikka eksoottisen aiheen huomioon ottaen Dragonstrike muistuttaakin huomattavan paljon konventionaalista lentosimulaattoria.

Erojakin on. Lohikäärmeen selässä hosuessaan kannattaa ratsastajan ottaa rauhallisesti, ettei tipu selästä, jolloin henkiinjääminen on kiinni ratsun kopparinkyvyistä. Onneksi pelissä ei ole Tellu-nimistä lohikäärmettä.

War of The Lance -kampanja kestää 22 tehtävän verran. Tehtävät ovat pääasiassa taistelua muita lohikäärmeitä vastaan, satunnaisia stealth-tehtäviä lukuunottamatta.

Grafiikka on varsinkin VGA-moodissa varsin kivaa.

1990 SyksyBlack dragon at two o'clock! That wouldn't take long if there were a Sidewinder hanging under the wing, but I suppose I'll have to make do with the Dragonlance. Unfortunately its range is a few metres, so Tally-Ho!, Sirdar! Flap Flap Flappety Flap. The Dragonlance meets the black dragon's belly with fatal consequences. In the collision, however, I'm thrown from my mount's back. 'Siiirdaaar! Caaatch meeee!' And Sirdar pulls it off. The mission ends in a victory loop.

The newest and most unusual of the AD&D games is set in the worm-infested world of Krynn. Dragonstrike is apparently the world's first dragon flight simulator, although, considering the exotic subject, Dragonstrike does resemble a conventional flight simulator a remarkable amount. A magic crystal ball serves as the radar, the dragon has two breath attacks (which ones depends on the species), and otherwise too the big lizard flies like a fighter jet, though it can't manage a loop.

Dragonstrike even has a HeadsUp-Display screen (the dragon holds its head up), but no afterburner, which would nevertheless have been easy to simulate by giving the serpent a big helping of pea soup.

There are differences too. Not many flight sims make you keep an eye on the hitpoints of both the pilot and the flying machine, and aeroplanes that chew and claw at each other haven't caught on yet, let alone pilots whacking each other with swords or Dragonlaces. When flailing about on a dragon's back the rider would do well to take it easy so as not to fall off, in which case survival hangs on the mount's catching skills. Luckily the game has no dragon called Tellu.

The War of The Lance campaign lasts for 22 missions. The missions are mainly combat against other dragons, apart from the occasional stealth mission.

The graphics are rather nice, especially in VGA mode. Apart from the dragons everything is shown as polygons, and if you get fed up with the Lego-ish dragons, you can tweak them into polygons too. For PCs short on oomph there's room for adjustment in the complexity and shading of the landscape. Flying goes however it goes on the keyboard, and better with either the mouse or the stick.

DragonStrike's advantage is that it's easy to play and there aren't many keys. Somehow it just doesn't manage to get me excited, because of a certain monotony in the missions, but maybe Dragonstrike will go down well with someone who has played fewer flight sims.
