Die Hard
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

New Yorkista vaimoaan tapaamaan tullut poliisi McClane joutuu rytinän keskelle ja sekasortoa hyväksikäyttäen livahtaa terroristeilta. Terroristit ovatkin itse asiassa jahtaamassa rahoja pilvenpiirtäjän isosta kassaholvista. Suunnitelmana on murtaa holvi, viedä rahat ja räjäyttää pilvenpiirtäjä, jotta poliisit uskoisivat heidänkin kuolleen räjähdyksessä.
Pelaaja ohjailee McClanea ja tavoitteena on nitistää kaikki terroristit ennen kuin he karkaavat rahoineen ja räjäyttävät koko valtavan pilvenpiirtäjän maan tasalle. Aikaa on 20 minuuttia ja odottava työ massiivinen. Onneksi talon käytäville on ripoteltu sinne tänne karttoja, joista pelaaja näkee missä tallustaa.
Peli on esitetty 3-D-vektorigrafiikalla McClanen selän takaa.
Etenkin joystickillä pelattaessa kontrollien tajuamiseen menee todella kauan. Näppis tuntuukin olevan parempi vaihtoehto. Sen verran vaikeudesta, että sitä tosiaan löytyy!
Die Hard on erinomainen tietokoneversio hyvästä elokuvasta, joskin alun yletön vaikeus saattaa turhauttaa monta pelaajaa luovuttamaan lopullisesti.
1990 SyksyDie Hard is based on the film of the same name, which was shown in Finland under the title Vain kuolleen ruumiini yli. Bumbling about somewhat comically as the film's hero is Bruce Willis, the male lead of the Konnankoukkuja Kahdelle series. Picked as the hero of a tough action film, the slightly beer-bellied Bruce-boy in my opinion already slips over into anti-hero territory, but the film is good all the same. Movie games have lately been good now and then, usually bad (e.g. Moonwalker), so I didn't know what to expect as I loaded up the game.
The game begins when terrorists have seized the Nakatomi building, a huge skyscraper that is still slightly unfinished. Policeman McClane, who has come from New York to see his wife, ends up in the middle of the ruckus and, taking advantage of the chaos, slips away from the terrorists. The terrorists are in fact after the money in the skyscraper's big vault. The plan is to crack the vault, take the money and blow up the skyscraper, so that the police would believe they too had died in the explosion.
The player steers McClane, and the goal is to bump off all the terrorists before they run off with the money and blow the whole huge skyscraper to the ground. There are 20 minutes on the clock and the job ahead is massive. Fortunately maps have been scattered here and there in the building's corridors, from which the player can see where they are trudging.
The game is presented in 3-D vector graphics from behind McClane's back. The player controls the hero with either a joystick or the keyboard. At the start the player has only a pistol, a few rounds for it, and iron fists. Every now and then a terrorist comes at you down the corridor, at which point the game switches to combat mode. The player can either use the gun and blow the crook's brains onto the wall, or else save ammo and kick the wind clean out of the baddie. A defeated terrorist may yield more weapons and ammo, or then again may not.
The corridors and rooms have been created excellently using filled vector graphics. A long corridor really does look like a long corridor, and the walls scroll excellently alongside the player. The rooms are usually mere props that you can flee into, but some of them even have a bit of furniture. The McClane sprite and the terrorists look digitised, so well in fact that anyone would recognise Bruce Willis from his characteristic slumped stance.
There isn't much of anything to say about the sound side, because there is no music and the sound effects are mainly dismal beeps. The game doesn't even recognise sound cards. The playability is a bit poor, at least at first, since walking, using the gun and fighting each have their own controls. Especially when playing with a joystick it takes a really long time to get the hang of the controls. The keyboard does seem to be the better option. As for difficulty, suffice it to say there's certainly plenty of it!
Die Hard is an excellent computer version of a good film, although the excessive difficulty at the start may frustrate many a player into giving up for good.
