Dan Dare III - The Escape
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1990 SyksyKaikkien tuntema (?) sarjakuvasankari Dan Dare on jo edennyt pelisarjansa kolmanteen osaan.
1990 SyksyUniversally known (?) comic-strip hero Dan Dare has already advanced to the third instalment of his game series. The evil Mekon, whom Dan already faced in the earlier instalments, is still alive and still plotting to take over the world. The only obstacle is that the Mekon has no suitable guinea pig for his genetic mutation experiments, and who could fit the bill better than the Mekon's oh-so-hated Dan himself?
So Dan was nabbed for the experiments and hauled off to the Mekon's research satellite, but there, in his forthright way, Dan made it clear to his captors that he is firmly opposed to animal testing, and is now attempting to escape in a shuttle he happened across along the way. Apparently the shuttle had not been fitted out for that particular purpose, since its tank was empty and the canisters had been 'cunningly' scattered all around the satellite. To help with the petrol hunt Dan has all the latest gear: from plasma rifle to atom bomb, and the terminal in the storeroom sells everything imaginable, in direst need even lives!
Armed to the teeth, Dan then sets off down the satellite's corridors on his petrol hunt, shooting up gene mutants and flitting about on a jetpack. In fact even the Mekon comes in useful, since if you shoot it enough, it leaves behind a teleporter key which, after a pointless intermission game, leads to the next level.
The game format is a collection of old ideas, mainly from the same team's earlier games Cybernoid and Stormlord. The graphics are pretty but not very varied. The title music and effects by Maniacs of Noise are excellent, but even so a certain degree of Spectrum syndrome shines through the whole game. DD 3 is disproportionately small; there are only a measly 5 levels, and even those aren't big enough. A bit more effort from the programmers and DD 3 would have been a good game. On the Amiga even the graphics are no longer in proportion to what the machine can do.
Hopefully the good team's next game will be better, because as things stand Dan Dare III is merely a slightly-better-than-average cliche game that wallows in graphics and music, and would have been better suited to a budget release.
