Damocles

1990 SyksyPaul Woakesin Damocles on yksi pelihistorian odotetuimmista suurteoksista.

Matka jatkuu V.I.P Limusiinilla presidentinpalatsiin, jossa huolestunut päämies paljastaa uhkaavan katastrofin yksityiskohdat.

1990 SyksyPaul Woakes's Damocles is one of the most eagerly awaited magnum opuses in gaming history. After several years of waiting and even more false alarms, the game had already begun to feel like an unreal myth.

Damocles is a direct sequel to Mercenary, so direct in fact that you can load in your saved position from Escape from Targ or Second City. The hero's role is the lone soldier of fortune familiar from the earlier games, ready to seize every opportunity that smells of money. The mark to be fleeced this time is the president of the planet Eris, over whom hangs, so to speak, the sword of Damocles, albeit in the shape of a comet on a collision course.

The game's intro alone blasts a full-power charge right into your eyes. The hero's ship plunges into the Gamma solar system, pierces the atmosphere of Eris and glides on autopilot into the spaceport of Capital City. The journey continues by V.I.P Limousine to the presidential palace, where the worried head of state reveals the details of the looming catastrophe. The whole chain of events is like one breathtaking tracking shot without a single cut.

The solar system, shaped in filled vector graphics, contains nine planets and nineteen moons. Almost all of them can be visited and many have at least one city. From this rather sizeable haystack you have to find the needle with which to pop the Damocles comet. The player is given the necessary clues right at the start, but the solution found by following them is only one of five possible ones.

Anyone who has played Mercenary will feel instantly at home amid Damocles's road networks, mysterious objects and hint-dropping messages. As usual there's also an impressive range of vehicles at your disposal, from spaceships to ground buggies. And of course teleports, which spare you space travel that eats alarmingly into your scant time of grace.

Vector graphics honed for speed are no longer a sensation this decade, but the illusion of a working world they create is exceptionally impressive. For example, once you've stepped inside a building, you can see through the window the ship parked outside and the heavenly bodies shining on the horizon. The number of shapes conjured out of vectors is enormous: the Sphinxes of Acheron, the windmills of Dion, the 16 million numbered pyramids of Midas, the "Buy an Acme Suit" neon sign flashing on the wall of a skyscraper, and so on and so forth. A couple of hours slip pleasantly by on an aimless sightseeing tour alone. I didn't expect much on the sound side, but the beeps and hisses, on a par with the Commodore 64 version of Mercenary, are a depressing failure to clear even that bar.

Apart from some vague battles, Damocles is "only" an adventure game. But for those who love adventures it's a dream come true. Best keep a big stack of A4 sheets beside you for writing down maps, item lists and coordinates, because you're going to spend a long, happy time in this game universe. Woakes's easy-going humour sees to that as well. Damocles shows what stuff classics are made of.
