Colorado

Esimerkiksi piipustaladattava tussari on pikkuisen kömpelö lähitaistelussa.

1990 SyksySilmarils, representing the younger generation of the French family of game houses, shoves its own take onto the swelling heap of graphic adventures, with the action set in the manly heroic landscapes of the Wild West. Fur trapper, ladies' man and frivolous spendthrift O¡Brian has caught wind of a gold mine on Indian land. So off he goes at once, so that he can carry on squandering money and charming the ladies.

The hero, brave and gallant, trudges through landscapes that change a screen at a time, hacking up Cheyenne Indians and assorted beasts of the forest and blasting them to dust. To begin with, dangling about his person as decoration are a rifle, an axe and a knife, but you can get more by collecting the Indians' valuables and lugging them to the local travelling trader. Besides roughing it in the wilds and climbing mountains you can also try shooting the rapids in a canoe, but the point of this action sequence never really became clear.

The player's headaches are mainly choosing the right route and making sensible use of the arsenal. The muzzle-loading shooting iron, for example, is a tad clumsy in close combat. Anyone thirsting for logical puzzles may find Colorado a slight disappointment, since the game is little more than an adventurous bash-'em-up, though a fairly varied one for all that.

As is typical of graphic adventures, in the side-on landscape you can also move into and out of the screen. Getting round rocks and stumps is irritatingly illogical. Sometimes, for example, you can't move down even though the way is clear, and yet you can move diagonally down. Besides, it's pretty ridiculous that a burly backwoodsman supposedly snuffs it if he plops into the rapids from a height of one metre. When steering this brittle-boned hero it's handiest to stick to the keyboard, especially as you have to fumble for the function keys every now and then anyway.

The presentation is tidy, but the approach is impersonal and the result a bit too much of the usual middling standard. And by the way, why do enemies always have to splat into smithereens, when it would be much classier for them to keel over dead in the dust?

Colorado is a decent enough effort from Silmarils in itself, but this time that crucial "must play it through" spark was missing.
