1991 SyksyMuistathan ne pienet, isoilla silmillä varustetut, värilliset karvapallot, joiden jalkapohjissa oli liimapinta, ja joita kaikki epätoivoiset yhtiöt jakoivat messuilla pienten lasten suuhun tungettaviksi. Siis juuri ne, jotka messujen jälkeen löytyivät mitä ihmeellisimmistä paikoista, kuten jääkaapin ovesta, koululaukusta tai Laura Palmerin päiväkirjan kannesta. No, nyt niistä on tehty peli ja mukana paketissa on jälleen yksi tuollainen suloinen/ärsyttävä stick-it!-pallo.
Creatures on valloittava peli. Kuka voisi olla rakastumatta päätä pahkaa pieneen karvapalloon, jonka pahanhajuinen hengitys tappaa useamman metrin päästä! Jo kaksi kenttää selvitettyään karvapallo heitetään kidutuskammioon ja sitten hupi vasta alkaa. Matkalla karvapallo voi kuitenkin kerätä mukaansa pienempiä otuksia noidalle, jonka otuksista tekemä taikajuoma tekee pallolle vielä tehokkaamman grillaushenkäyksen kunnon Mr Hyde -tyyliin. Ja aikanaan pallo pääsee ottelemaan demoneja vastaan ja pelastamaan ystävänsä.
Creatures todella on valloittava peli. Heti pelaamisen aloitettuaan huomaa, kuinka paljon huomiota on kiinnitetty kaikkien hahmojen piirtämiseen, animointiin ja taustojen hilpeyteen. Eri näköiset hirviöt liikkuvat eri tavalla ja osuman saatuaan välkkyvät hieman aikaa. Tämä onkin ehdottoman tärkeää, sillä myöhemmin pelissä on hirviöitä, jotka tuhoutuvat vain tietyllä aseella. Myös karvapallon liikuttelu on vaivatonta, eikä edes erittäin tarkkojen hyppyjen suorittaminen tuota pelissä liikaa vaivaa.
Sekä grafiikassa ja pelin juonessa on selvä sarjakuvamainen henki, jota tukevat vielä tavallista oudommat äänet. Pelissä on myös paljon ivallista ja jopa mustaa huumoria niille, jotka sellaista arvostavat.
Mitään tyhjentävää yhteenvetoa on pelistä turha tehdä. Se olisi kuitenkin vain ylipitkä kehusanojen luettelo, Creatures on yksinkertaisesti vain todella hyvä peli, jonka kaltaisia toivomme lisää.
1991 SyksyYou'll remember those little coloured fuzzballs with big eyes and sticky pads on the soles of their feet, which every desperate company handed out at trade fairs for small children to stuff in their mouths. Yes, the very ones that turned up after the fair in the most amazing places, like the fridge door, a school bag or the cover of Laura Palmer's diary. Well, now they've been made into a game, and the package comes with yet another of those sweet/irritating stick-it! balls.
Creatures is a captivating game. Who could help falling head over heels for a little fuzzball whose foul breath kills from several metres away! After clearing just two levels the fuzzball gets thrown into a torture chamber, and that's when the fun really starts. Along the way, though, the fuzzball can collect smaller critters for a witch, whose potion made from the critters gives the ball an even more effective grilling breath, in proper Mr Hyde style. And in due course the ball gets to fight demons and rescue its friends.
Creatures really is a captivating game. As soon as you start playing you notice how much attention has been paid to the drawing and animation of all the characters and to the jollity of the backgrounds. Different-looking monsters move in different ways, and after taking a hit they flash for a little while. This is absolutely vital, since later in the game there are monsters that can only be destroyed with a particular weapon. Moving the fuzzball around is effortless too, and even pulling off extremely precise jumps doesn't cause too much trouble in the game.
Both the graphics and the game's plot have a clear cartoon-like spirit, further backed up by stranger-than-usual sound effects. The game also has plenty of mocking and even black humour for those who appreciate that kind of thing.
There's no point writing any exhaustive summary of the game. It would only be an overlong list of words of praise anyway; Creatures is quite simply a really good game, and we hope to see more like it.
