Coloris

Seitsemästä jarrutuksesta saa rangaistukseksi pohjaa kohottavan sakkorivin.

Tetrismäisillä peleillä on lähes yliluonnollinen kyky vangita mielenkiinto tuntikausiksi. Turha yrittääkään pohtia syitä. Tyydytään toteamukseen, että Coloriksessa kaikki palaset loksahtavat kohdalleen.

1990 KevätAvesoft's strapping, lustily kicking firstborn is a Tetris-style puzzle game. Cloning Tetris is a somewhat reckless wander along the fringes of the courtroom, but Coloris, developed by Pertti Lehtinen, is an interesting borderline case in that an original variation has been built out of the basic elements of the Russian model.

In Coloris you drop vertical bars three pieces tall into a box measuring 7x14 squares, and try to put off the moment it fills up. Each of the pieces in a bar is randomly one of five colours, and their order can be switched with the fire button.

The idea is to arrange the bars so that at least three pieces of the same colour line up side by side or vertically, at which point they disappear. The more pieces you manage to clear at once, the better the reward: one or more rows are removed from the bottom of the screen, and on top of that you can get a "joker", in which all the pieces are the same colour.

The joystick lets you adjust how fast the pieces fall, which is taken into account in the scoring. Braking seven times earns you a penalty row that pushes the floor up. In true Tetris style the game gradually speeds up, and in the end you're in full-blown panic. Besides the basic game there's also a quick game to choose from, with a hundred-second time limit and a box floor that rises relentlessly.

The clear, unfussy graphics have one interesting feature: the scoreboards and the tubular frames of the box seem to stand a couple of centimetres proud of the screen. A couple of hours of staring only strengthens the illusion. Graphics wizard Harri Granholm has created the three-dimensional impression purely through shading and choice of colours.

The background music tailored by the Amigos team, using soft marimba sounds, creates a focused mood, but since it's so short the effect is repetitive and nagging. A touch of international colour comes from the Norwegian title music, which sets the mood in the vein of the Alien theme.

There seems to be a small blunder in the counting of cleared pieces: in long chain reactions the program doesn't take all the pieces into account. Whether the machine runs out of fingers to count on or something else is wrong, either way the player is rewarded with fewer joker bonuses than the instructions promise.

Tetris-like games have an almost supernatural ability to hold your interest for hours on end. No point even trying to work out why. Let's just settle for saying that in Coloris all the pieces click into place.
