Centurion - Defender Of Rome

Siinä on pohjimmiltaan Electronic Artsin Centurion. Pelin suunnittelusta vastaa Kellyn Beck, joka on suunnitellut Cinemawarelle Defender Of The Crownin, Rocket Rangerin ja S.D.I.:n.

1990 SyksyIf your best subject at school is history and you know everything about Julius Caesar and Kleopatra, and not just from Asterix, then Centurion was made just for You. World conquest has never been this much fun or this effortless.

You have at your disposal one army of a couple of thousand men, and with it you are supposed to conquer the world. That, at bottom, is Electronic Arts' Centurion. The game was designed by Kellyn Beck, who designed Defender Of The Crown, Rocket Ranger and S.D.I. for Cinemaware. So it's only natural that the game is afflicted with Cinemaware-ishness. Nice graphics and sounds, but not all that much to do.

World conquest is a project that goes like this: move the army into the country to be conquered, watch a little battle animation (which you can influence a bit yourself), tax the yokels out of their markkas, bring the army back up to fighting strength and move on to the next country. Well, it's not quite as simple as that, but nearly. In battle you have to choose a tactic for your army. With one particular tactic it's almost impossible to lose, which makes the fighting ridiculously easy. The thing with taxes is that the people start getting jumpy if taxation is steep. So at first you can keep a stiff tax rate for a couple of years, and when the people start revolting, you just drop the rate low for a couple of years and everything is fine again. Once twenty-odd years have gone by, there should be enough money in the treasury to build an enormous fleet. Then just load a big army onto the ships and point the prow toward England. On the easiest difficulty levels Centurion is absolutely ridiculously easy; only the two hardest levels put up any kind of resistance.

The fly in the ointment is the whining citizenry. The Romans, you see, are mad about circus entertainment and are forever demanding gladiator fights, which taxes the treasury horribly. There's a solution for this too: let a foreign invader take the capital, Rome, once, then win it back, and the citizens will have had their fill of gladiator shows for a few years. Restless citizens can also be pacified with chariot races, which works out cheaper. In the game you can even try to seduce Kleopatra, who incidentally looks exactly like Elizabeth Taylor.

For a strategy game, Centurion is unusually clear and pleasant. You don't even need to glance at the manual; you'll get into the game without it in no time flat. Mouse control is a straightforward and quick way of controlling things, and the fine pictures and nice music certainly don't get in the way of playing. The game does, however, stay superficial (cf. Cinemaware disease), and the initial spell lasts a few hours, in which time you'll manage to play it through a couple of times. For those interested in war/strategy games, Centurion guarantees a nice, soft landing.
