Colonial Conquest

1988Strategiapelien kuninkaan Strategic Simulationc Inc:in, parhaimpia pelejä on Colonial Conquest, joka sijoittuu ihmiskunnan nopean kehityksen kauteen, siirtomaavallan aikakauteen. Päämääränä, jo nimestä päätellen, on hankkia itselleen siirtomaita, joista saavilla varoilla hankitaan armeijoita, joilla vallataan uusia siirtomaita, joista saatavilla varoilla hankitaan lisää armeijoita...

Eri valtioilla on erilaiset edellytykset maailmanherruuteen.

Helppoutta aloittelevalle, haastavuutta ammattilaiselle, nopeasti omaksuttavuutta jokaiselle. Ja jos peliä on pelannut paljon, on mukavaa historiantunnilla esitellä vaihtoehtoisia ratkaisuja kolonialismin ongelmiin.

1988One of the best games from Strategic Simulationc Inc, the king of strategy games, is Colonial Conquest, which is set in a period of rapid human development, the age of colonial power. The aim, as the name already suggests, is to acquire colonies, whose revenues buy armies, which conquer new colonies, whose revenues buy more armies... And on the side you wage war with the other colonial powers.

Six superpowers take part in the race for colonies: Germany, Russia, Japan, England, France and the USA. All the other states that appear on the world map are neutral for as long as they haven't been conquered.

In the best SSI style, the game has three scenarios to choose from: standard, 1880, i.e. the race for colonies, and 1914, the brink of war. In the standard scenario none of the colonial powers holds anything at the start except its own country, its army and its navy. In the 1880 scenario everyone already has colonies, and finally, in 1914, the world war gets into full swing in both Europe and Africa.

The different nations have different prospects of world domination. The soldiers vary in quality, and equipping them costs money; the same goes for the navy. British soldiers are the best in the world, but they also cost the most. They're good at winning, but if a battle is lost, the losses are huge too, whereas Russian soldiers cost only a third of what the British do, but are vastly weaker. The British likewise have the best navy, and it is also the cheapest to build. The Germans have the best chance of winning the game, if only because of the size of the army they start with. And since their soldiers and navy are the second best and relatively cheap, you can put a fighting force together quickly.

With Colonial Conquest SSI has departed from its usual way of making games and made the game almost entirely playable with the joystick. Only moving on to the next phase and looking at the scores or the war tables requires the function keys. The playability is, accordingly, really good.

Each game round lasts a year (not in real time), during which there are four movement phases. In one phase an army can reach the lands of a neighbouring country, and a navy can get even further. At the turn of the year there is a build phase, when the player, with the money from their colonies, can buy army in lots of 10,000 men ($200,000-$600,000), have a navy built ($300,000-$700,000), fortify their colonies (which doubles their defensive strength), give economic aid to states that are still independent, send out spies and try to bribe independent states over to their side.

There isn't much to be said about the graphics in this game. To non-strategy-fanatics this game is an abomination. The same goes for the sound. There isn't any. Not much, anyway.

Almost all strategy games are Games, but CC is The Game among StrategyGames. Ease for the beginner, challenge for the professional, quick to pick up for everyone. And if you've played the game a lot, it's nice to present alternative solutions to the problems of colonialism in history class.
