California Games

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

California Games

1990 SyksyFamiliar to home computer owners, this package simulating quintessentially Yankee youth pastimes has been incarnated on just about every machine, right down to the Lynx. Nothing surprising about that. The game's subject matter works as a trigger for images that sell: Californian beefcakes boarding about in garish shorts, shapely bikini beauties, blazing sun and bronzed skin.

Unusually for a sports game, CG doesn't demand furious waggling of the joystick, but mastery of controls that are both versatile and convoluted. Compared with the original version, the graphics, the sound and even the playability have hardly been changed in any direction at all.

Foot Bag, or kicking a hacky sack about, was the most interesting event at least on the home computers, but in the Sega version it has been done poorly. The chap's joints are so slow that the ball gets away from him on the first badly aimed kick. Doing skateboard tricks on the ramp is perhaps the best event in the package, but the awkward control commands don't exactly become second nature right away.

Roller skating and BMX biking are also among the better ones. In the former you whizz along a sidewalk full of litter, manhole covers and other obstacles, while in the latter you perform acrobatic stunts on a hilly track. The surfing is still somehow bearable, but the apathetic tedium of frisbee throwing hasn't turned into anything else in the Sega version.

Played with a small crowd, the California games are fine time-killing fun, but played alone it's hard to hold back a yawn. Despite its success, California Games is in my opinion the worst of Epyx's sports series, but you're free to disagree.
