Skate or Die
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1988Yippey! Uusi tekele Electronic Artsilta! Tällä kertaa EOA on käynyt käsiksi jo Epyxin California Gamesista tuttuun rullalautailuun.
1988Yippee! A new concoction from Electronic Arts! This time EOA has got stuck into skateboarding, already familiar from Epyx's California Games. There are other links as well: M. Kosaka, S. Landrum and D. Bunch, who are credited as the authors, have also had a hand in knocking together Epyx's Games titles. Skate or Die is in fact an expansion of the ramp skating in California Games; slalom, racing and a one-on-one duel on boards in a curved swimming pool have been added.
After loading the game for a good while, the C-64 slaps a neat title screen up and plays a snippet of digitised music. The drums, synth voice and other sounds have apparently been sampled into a string of bits and shoved into memory. It sounds a bit murky, but still rather interesting with its chords and rhythm backing ... after all, you can easily get fed up with what the Commodore 64's sound chip comes up with on its own, I speak from experience.
The menu is a picture of Rodney's skateboard shop, where the owner, who looks like an ageing punk, dishes out tips on the game and, depending on your choice, lets the eager board artist go and practise or compete. Moving from one event to the next is done by navigating from one part of town to another: the park has the slalom hill, the swimming pool has the duel and so on. Pleasant. Less nice is that each event is loaded separately from disk. Then again, events all crammed into memory at the same time would have suffered in quality.
On first impressions, the best and most spectacular of the events is the familiar freestyle, where by building up speed on the ramp and jumping you pull off ever more acrobatic feats (the most popular being the basic slip-up combined with an arcing fly-off and a full-body landing). The downhill race also looks fun; there you can annoy your opponent with karate kicks. Duller than these were the park slalom and the high jump. In the latter, for example, what seemed to matter most was joystick-rattling of the kind best suited to fever patients with the shakes - sports games will probably never be rid of that. The exotic pool duel didn't thrill me either, once the computer opponent had grabbed the initiative. Now, though, I finally found out what the phrase 'to be knocked off the board' - i.e. beaten hollow - really means.
On the whole the playability felt nice. You only need the keyboard to get the player's name into the computer's head; everything else is handled with the joystick, apart from flipping the disk over. The graphics were easy on the eye, the pictures and colours were neat. The sounds flowed smoothly along the ear canals, especially the intro music. The pool tournament could have been developed a little further, graphically as well as gameplay-wise, but it's a good package even as it is. Out of a nifty idea the makers have once again worked up a smooth-feeling product. The ball, the cube and the pyramid haven't lost their way. More of this, electric artists!!
