1990 SyksyDefender of the Crownilla debytoinut Cinemaware on vihdoin onnistunut kääntämään urheilupelisarjansa ensimmäisen, TV-Sports Footballin myös kuusneloseen. Ja amerikkalainen jalkapallohan oli pelin nimi tällä kertaa. Jos joku on asiaan vihkiytymätön, hänelle kerrottakoon, että se on sellainen isojen miesten peli, jossa pari tusinaa miestä juoksee nurmella soikean pelivälineen perässä, samalla hiukan murjoen toisiaan.
Cinemawaren pelit ovat yleensäkin kyllästettyjä mahtavalla grafiikalla, eikä TVS-F ole mikään poikkeus tässä suhteessa. Miehet on animoitu pehmeästi ja niitä on iso joukko kerralla kuvassa, ja 'ohjelman' juontajakin on ihan näppärästi animoitu.
Ainoa varsinainen 'kunnon' simulaatio tästä aiheesta oli vanha 4th & Inches, ja olisi luullut tämän pistävän paremmaksi. Mutta pettymys tuli. Strategioita ei ole sen enempää, joukkueoptioita ei ole paljon parannettu vanhasta klassikosta, ja tämä on kaiken huipuksi hitaampi pelata. Onneksi mukana on sentään liigapelit, jotain näyttävää grafiikkaa ja joukkue-construction kit, joten ei kehitys sentään huonompaan päin ole mennyt.
Erilaiset valittavat strategiat (16 hyökkäys- ja 16 puolustusstrategiaa) on osittain korvattu taktisilla kaavioilla, joissa miehet ovat palloja ja liikkeet nuolia, ja näin ollen tehty helpommin ymmärrettäväksi niille, jotka eivät viitsi opetella taktiikoiden englanninkielisiä nimityksiä. Miinuksena mainittakoon vielä tuskastuttavat latailut joka välissä - onneksi ei sentään levyä tarvitse vaihtaa kesken pelin.
Loppujen lopuksi on hyvin vaikea päätellä mille joukolle tämäkin peli on suunnattu: Amerikkalaisen Jalkapallon strategiapuoleen perehtyneille tästä ei löytyne tarpeeksi syvyyttä, ja toimintamiehelle ei taas ole nopeutta ja pelattavuutta tarpeeksi. Joka tapauksessa ainakin lajin hartaat harrastajat saanevat tästä jotain irti.
Toivottavasti Cinemawaren TV-Sports-sarjan seuraava osa olisi räväkämpi.
1990 SyksyCinemaware, who made their debut with Defender of the Crown, have finally managed to convert the first game in their sports series, TV-Sports Football, to the C-64 as well. And American football was the name of the game this time. If anyone is uninitiated in the matter, let it be said that it's one of those big men's games in which a couple of dozen men run across the grass after an oval piece of sporting equipment, roughing each other up a little along the way.
Cinemaware's games are generally saturated with magnificent graphics, and TVS-F is no exception in this respect. The men are smoothly animated and there's a big crowd of them on screen at once, and even the host of the 'program' is quite nicely animated.
The only genuinely 'proper' simulation on this subject was the old 4th & Inches, and you'd have thought this one would go one better. But disappointment struck. There are no more strategies than before, the team options haven't been improved much on the old classic, and to top it all this one is slower to play. Luckily there are at least league games, some flashy graphics and a team-construction kit, so things haven't actually gone backwards.
The various selectable strategies (16 offensive and 16 defensive) have partly been replaced with tactical diagrams in which the men are circles and the movements are arrows, which makes them easier to understand for those who can't be bothered to learn the English names of the tactics. On the minus side, let it also be mentioned that there's exasperating loading at every turn - luckily you don't have to swap disks in the middle of a game, at least.
In the end it's very hard to work out who this game, too, is aimed at: those versed in the strategic side of American Football probably won't find enough depth here, while the action man, for his part, won't get enough speed and playability. In any case, at least devoted followers of the sport should get something out of it.
Here's hoping the next instalment in Cinemaware's TV-Sports series will be punchier.
