1990 SyksyItämainen urheilu on niitä aiheita, jotka putkahtavat kotimikroihin säännöllisin välein. Mutta Budokan ei olekaan mikä tahansa karateräpellys. Taustalla on Electronic Artsin Michael Kosaka, joka on jo syntyperänsäkin ansiosta oikea henkilö ideoimaan markkinoiden monipuolisinta ja aidoimmin budo-henkeä tavoittelevaa peliä.
Budokaniin on koottu samaan nyyttiin kaikkein agressiivisimmat itämaiset lajit. Ehkä oudoin on Bo, jossa vastustajaa sohitaan ruokokepillä.
Budokan on taistelu-urheilupelien ehdotonta kärkeä. Intomielisen joysticksensein ei tarvitse miettiä, mihin rahansa sijoittaa.
1990 SyksyEastern sport is one of those subjects that pop up on home computers at regular intervals. But Budokan is no ordinary karate botch-job. Behind it is Electronic Arts' Michael Kosaka, who by ancestry alone is the right person to come up with the most versatile game on the market, and the one that most authentically strives for the spirit of budo.
Budokan ties the most aggressive of the Eastern disciplines up together in one bundle. Karate needs no introduction, and probably neither does Kendo, which is the Eastern version of fencing - no real killing instrument is used, mind you. In Nunchaku, on the other hand, you flail about with short sticks joined by a chain. The implement, incidentally, was used in days of old for threshing grain. Perhaps the oddest is Bo, in which you jab at your opponent with a cane stick.
You can train in the disciplines on your own, against a master or with a friend. Nothing stops opponents from choosing different disciplines, which makes the bouts particularly interesting - a seasoned karateka against a novice kendo-stick swinger is a pretty well-balanced pairing. The fighters' strength and stamina affect their performance, so reckless thrashing about will get you nowhere. The game's biggest challenge is the Budokan tournament, where you can run into some truly exotic disciplines.
There is an unbelievable number of different moves, 30-40 in each discipline, and all of them consistently beautifully animated. The hardest ones need two wrenches of the stick and a well-timed press of the fire button. You have to grind away at them for a really long time before they start to come off, if they come off even then. There is just enough erratic behaviour in the program that the timing often comes down to pure luck. If you seriously want to master all the moves, you'd do well to learn to play with the keyboard.
Eastern sport wouldn't be complete without Eastern music and rock-garden aesthetics, and both are indeed there, with an authentic feel. The sound is by who else but Rob Hubbard, whom the Brits miss so wistfully. Among the less pleasant features of the audio side is the turbo loader, which wrings an exceptionally grating racket out of the disk drive.
Budokan is at the absolute top of the combat sports games. The avid joystick sensei needn't think twice about where to put their money.
