Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. 1990 SyksyEnsin Out Run, sitten sama turbona ja nyt taisteluversiona. On suunnittelijoilla sentään ollut sen verran mielikuvitusta, ettei pelien nimiksi ole pistetty Out Run ykkönen, kakkonen ja kolmonen. BOR on kuin riisuttu versio Chase H.Q.:sta, joka sekin on julkaistu Segalle, mutta huomattavasti pelattavampi ja grafiikaltaan aivan toista luokkaa.
Idea on tuttu: istahdat turboviritellyn bensahirviön rattiin ja alat kaasutella kiinni edellä kiitävää lainrikkojaa väistellen matelevia kuplavolkkareita, öljyläikkiä ja tiesulkuja. Etappien päätteeksi on mahdollisuus viritellä autoonsa uusia ominaisuuksia, kuten lisää tehoa kaasuttimeen, parempi moottori, pitävämmät renkaat ja tukevampi kori roiston romuttamista varten. Ainoa kertakäyttöinen ostos on turboahtimen kurkkuun kaadettava nitro.
Sulavasti mutkittelevalla kolmikaistaisella tiellä syksyvän punaisen Ferrarin ohjauksessa on mainio tuntuma, tosin auto liikkuu sivusuunnassa niin hitaasti, että mutkan takaa eteen singahtavia hidastelijoita ei aina kerkiä väistää. Onneksi pientareen kautta koukkiminen ei mitenkään olennaisesti häiritse matkantekoa. Vaikeustaso on hiottu todella tarkkaan. Kun rosmon vihdoin saa kiinni ja sitä alkaa töniä romuksi, toimituksesta kehkeytyy yleensä hermoja riipivä sekunttipeli.
Moduulin lykkää mielellään koneeseen pelkästään ajamisen vuoksi. Kunhan Sega vielä viitsisi pistää mukaan kumpuilevaa maastoa, kuten Nintendon Rad Racerissa, tuloksena olisi huippuluokan autoilupeli.
1990 SyksyFirst Out Run, then the same thing as a turbo, and now as a battle version. The designers have at least had enough imagination not to name the games Out Run 1, 2 and 3. BOR is like a stripped-down version of Chase H.Q., which has also been released for the Sega, but it is considerably more playable and in a completely different class graphically.
The idea is familiar: you plonk yourself behind the wheel of a turbo-tuned petrol monster and put your foot down to catch the lawbreaker speeding ahead, dodging crawling VW Beetles, oil slicks and roadblocks. At the end of each stage you get the chance to tune new features into your car, like more power to the carburettor, a better engine, grippier tyres and a sturdier body for smashing the villain to scrap. The only single-use purchase is the nitro you pour down the turbocharger's throat.
On the smoothly winding three-lane road the throbbing red Ferrari handles with a splendid feel, though the car moves sideways so slowly that you can't always dodge the dawdlers that shoot out in front of you from around a bend. Luckily, cutting round them via the hard shoulder doesn't really hold you up at all. The difficulty level has been honed really precisely. When you finally catch the crook and start shunting it into scrap, the proceedings usually turn into a nerve-shredding game of seconds.
You'll happily shove the cartridge into the machine for the driving alone. If only Sega could also be bothered to throw in some rolling terrain, as in Nintendo's Rad Racer, the result would be a top-class driving game.
