Outrun

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Outrun

Sinänsä toteutus on kelvollinen. Ajotuntuma on hyvä ja toisinaan jopa tulee tunne mäkisellä tiellä ajamisesta. Suurin pettymys on kuitenkin tapa, jolla liikkeen tuntu on luotu. Kuusnelosessa siihen käytetään yli koko ruudun ulottuvia palkkeja, joiden värejä vaihtamalla vauhti syntyy. Tie on projisoitu viivoina palkkien päälle. Aitoutta löytyy mukana tulevalta audiokasetilta, johon on talletettu originaalin sountrack.

Outrun ei tarjoa mitään uutta puhkikulutettuun autollaajoteemaan. Kahdeksanbittisiin koneisiin ei pitäisi yrittää sulloa pelejä, joiden teho lepää pelkästään grafiikassa. Siihen vaaditaan ST tai Amiga.

1988What a dream it is to go tearing down the motorway in a red convertible, the engine roaring like a committee of ten lions, the sun shining merrily and a gentle breeze tousling your hair above your sunglasses. And to top it off, sitting next to you is a beautiful, beautiful blonde, telling you the funny story about what happened at a disco in '82 for the hundredth time. Ten more times and you'd gladly swap her for a frosty, sparkling six-pack.

This is roughly the mood that Outrun, the home-computer conversion of a hugely popular coin-op, tries to convey. In fact this Outrun could be almost any racing game, since it offers nothing new, and on the Commodore 64 even the blonde has dark hair.

As such, the implementation is passable. The driving feel is good, and at times you even get the sensation of driving on a hilly road. The biggest disappointment, though, is the way the sense of motion has been created. On the Commodore 64 it uses bars stretching across the whole screen, and the speed comes from changing their colours. The road is projected as lines on top of the bars. The effect really isn't like driving down a highway at all, more like pottering around a car park. Only in the Amstrad and Atari ST Outruns does the scenery follow the arcade original. Authenticity can be found on the audio cassette that comes with the game, which holds the original's soundtrack.

Outrun offers nothing new on the worn-out driving-a-car theme. You shouldn't try to cram games whose punch rests purely on the graphics into eight-bit machines. That takes an ST or an Amiga.
