Adidas Championship Football

1990 SyksyItalia 1990. Goldin virallinen Meksikon kisojen aikaan julkaistu futispeli. Tänä vuonna peliyhtiöt ovat kuitenkin viisaasti panostaneet myös itse ohjelman tasoon, muutamaa poikkeavaa halpisyhtiötä lukuun ottamatta.

Adidas Championship Football alkaa ainakin lupaavasti: kolme latauskuvaa, latausmusiikki ja Oceanin pyörivä logo. Pelin latauduttua todellisuus iskee kuitenkin takaisin.

Peli on kuvattu suoraan ylhäältä päin hyökkäämisen tapahtuessa pystysuunnassa. Tuomarilinja on tiukin kaikista pelaamistani futispeleistä, mikä puolestaan on hyvää asennekasvatusta tuleville tähdille.

Potkun voiman säätö on toteutettu aika hyvin: pelaaja pitää tulitusnappia pohjaan painettuna, kunnes alareunassa oleva voimapilari on kasvanut tarpeeksi suureksi.

Kauden muun tarjonnan joukossa Adidas Championship Football pärjää ihan mukavasti, muttei erotu edukseen muista.

1990 SyksyItalia 1990. Plenty of people are surely boiling over already at this point, while over at the game companies they're chuckling and rubbing their hands. All kinds of official conversions, licensed games and games released alongside major events are a temptation to churn out worthless products and sink a bigger share of the budget into marketing. A good example of this is U.S. Gold's official football game, released at the time of the Mexico tournament four years ago. This year, though, the game companies have wisely put effort into the quality of the program itself too, apart from a few odd budget outfits.

Adidas Championship Football at least starts promisingly: three loading screens, loading music and Ocean's spinning logo. Once the game has loaded, though, reality strikes back. The menus are rather meagre and you can't do much to influence your team. You can pick the nationality and the attacking formation, but you can't fiddle with the line-up. This won't necessarily bother every gamer, since this way you get into the game itself much faster and with less hassle.

The game is viewed from directly above, with attacking done vertically. The player sprites are quite small, and the playability isn't the best possible. The graphics are otherwise handled competently, and the hubbub of the crowd and the sounds of the ball being touched are clear. The refereeing is the strictest of all the football games I've played, which in turn is good attitude training for future stars.

The player you're controlling at any given moment could, however, have been shown in a better way than with a flashing shirt, which isn't always clear enough. The slowness of the game also nags, which is why you can't get excited enough about the action.

The kick power adjustment has been done quite well: the player holds the fire button down until the power bar at the bottom has grown big enough. The spot where you kick the ball can also be changed. The ball doesn't automatically stick to the dribbling player's foot, but twirling around with the ball is still remarkably free. Goal kicks, free kicks and penalty kicks are all yours to take, and now saving a pen is also within the bounds of possibility.

Among the rest of the season's offerings Adidas Championship Football holds its own pretty nicely, but doesn't stand out from the others. Since you can't really influence the result of a match other than by playing, the action part itself ought to have been faster-paced and better executed. Ocean didn't, however, fall into the same trap as Players, who released a batch of different but uniformly poor football games around the time of the World Cup.

Still, the Adidas footie is by no means a bad game, and it appeals more to football fans who are interested only in the playing part.
