AD & D: Dragons of Flame
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1990 KevätDragonlance-saagalla tuntuu olevan ongelma. Tämä ongelma on nainen, ammatti kuningatar, nimi Takhisis, harrastus Krynnin maan kiusaaminen. Draconian joukot vyöryvät yli Krynnin ja maan pelastaminen on Heroes of The Lancesta tutun joukkion harteilla, yllätys yllätys. Tällä kertaa menussa on Pax Tharkaksen orjaparkojen vapauttaminen ja miekka Wyrmslayerin käyttäminen nimensä mukaiseen tarkoitukseen. Näin Takhisis pysyy aloillaan jopa seuraavaan peliin asti.
DOF on kehitetty Heroes Of The Lancesta saadun palautteen perusteella ja se näkyy: DOF antaa huomattavasti AD&D:ta vastaavamman kuvan. Pelialue on tuhansia kertoja laajempi eli käytännössä sankaripoppoo liikkuu isolla kartalla aivan Gauntlet-tyyliin.
Velho Raistlinin sauvakin on uudelleenladattavaa mallia, vaikka toimenpide vaatiikin vikkelät sormet. Raistlinin ollessa joukon johtava häntä vastaan heitetyt loitsut nimittäin imeytyvät sauvaan. Ylilataus tietysti polttaa koko kepin.
Pelattavuudeltaan Dragons of Flame on huomattavasti toimivampi peli kuin HOTL. Hahmot liikkuvat ripeästi ja tottelevat joystickia niinkuin pitää. Menusysteemi toimii myös option alkukirjaimella, mikä nopeuttaa rutiinitoimintaa.
Jos epäonni potkaisee vaikka kunnon peikkolauma saappaanaan aiheuttaen kroonisen sankarikadon, uusi peli käynnistyy ilman mittavia levynvaihtoja tai uudelleenboottauksia. Tilanteentalletuskin löytyy.
Liekkilohharit on toimiva yhdistelmä roolipeliä ja toimintaa, jonka esikuva on selvä: Nintendosta tuttu Zelda II. Juonikuvioita voisi kyllä alkaa vähän miettiä: joka toisessa AD&D-pelissä mätkitään Tyranthraxus, joka toisessa Takhisis. Vaan mitäpä tuosta, flambeeratut madot on hyvä peli.
1990 KevätThe Dragonlance saga seems to have a problem. The problem is a woman: occupation queen, name Takhisis, hobby tormenting the land of Krynn. Draconian armies are sweeping across Krynn, and saving the land rests on the shoulders of the gang familiar from Heroes of The Lance, surprise surprise. This time the menu features freeing the poor slaves of Pax Tharkas and putting the sword Wyrmslayer to the use its name suggests. That way Takhisis stays put, all the way until the next game.
DOF was developed on the basis of the feedback Heroes Of The Lance received, and it shows: DOF gives a considerably more faithful picture of AD&D. The playing area is thousands of times bigger, which in practice means the hero posse roams a big map just Gauntlet-style. Running into something from the expanded monster selection, or into an NPC, yanks the party into a fight with melee weapons, spells and ranged weapons.
Combat goes the way familiar from HOTL: the party's point man does the fighting, while the rest apparently roll themselves a smoke and belt out cheers of encouragement. Combat couldn't be simpler: with the fire button held down, the hero on shift hacks away, and the stick sets the direction. It's fair enough to grumble that a band of up to eight is represented by a single hero, while the monsters get to come as a pack.
The seemingly hopeless situation is improved by the option to rest, which not only raises hit points but also recharges Goldmoon's lighter clerical spells. The wizard Raistlin's staff is a rechargeable model too, although the procedure does call for nimble fingers. You see, when Raistlin is leading the party, spells cast against him are absorbed into the staff. Overloading it naturally burns out the whole stick.
In terms of playability Dragons of Flame is a considerably better-working game than HOTL. The characters move briskly and obey the joystick the way they should. The menu system also works by the first letter of each option, which speeds up routine actions.
If bad luck puts the boot in, with, say, a good solid troll pack for a boot, and causes a chronic crop failure of heroes, a new game starts without massive disk swapping or rebooting. There's a save game option too.
Flame Draggos is a working combination of role-playing and action, and its role model is obvious: Zelda II, familiar from the Nintendo. Someone could start giving the plotlines a little thought, though: every other AD&D game has you bashing Tyranthraxus, and the other half Takhisis. But what of it, flambéed wyrms is a good game.
