Y's
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1990 KevätRoolipelimäinen Y's toistaa ikuista teemaa mystisen esineen etsinnästä. Tällä kertaa kateissa ovat Y'sin kirjat ja Sir Galahadin haarniskanperijänä on piskuinen Aron. Pimeyden voimia edustaa Dark Dekt, Esterian valtakunnan perivihollinen.
Pelin ensimmäisessä puoliskossa Aron vaeltaa maan päällä ja hankkii aseistusta, kartuttaa tietojaan ja kerää kokemusta örkinlahtauksella. Maanpäällinen alue on aika suppea ja poikkeuksellisen suoraviivaisesti jaoteltu: kaupunki, metsä, kylä ja vuoristo. Innokkaiden kartoittajien kynät saavat käyttöä temppelin ja maanalaisten luolien laajahkoissa sokkeloverkostoissa.
Toisen osan loppukliimaksissa näyttämönä on valtaisa 21-kerroksinen Tuomion Torni, joka vilisee hirviöitä ja ansoja.
Vierivään malsemaan ripoteltujen hirviöiden teurastaminen käy reaaliajassa pikkuisen Aronin pistäessä pikkuisella miekallaan. Ylhäältä egyptiläisittäin (siis profiilina) kuvatun grafiikan paras oivallus on luolissa, joissa näkyvyys rajoittuu soihdun valaisemaan kehään. Rakennuksissa poiketessaan saa ihastella kauniita sisäkuvia.
Sitten haukkumiset. Ensinnäkin juoni on turhan niukka.
1990 KevätThe role-playing-flavoured Y's repeats the eternal theme of the quest for a mystical object. This time it's the Books of Y's that have gone missing, and the heir to Sir Galahad's armour is tiny Aron. The powers of darkness are represented by Dark Dekt, the sworn enemy of the kingdom of Esteria.
In the first half of the game Aron roams the surface of the land, acquiring weaponry, building up his knowledge and gathering experience through orc-butchery. The overground area is rather limited and exceptionally straightforwardly laid out: town, forest, village and mountains. Keen mappers' pens will get some use in the fairly extensive maze networks of the temple and the underground caves.
For the grand climax at the end of the second part, the stage is the enormous 21-storey Tower of Doom, which is swarming with monsters and traps.
Slaughtering the monsters sprinkled across the scrolling landscape happens in real time, with little Aron jabbing away with his little sword. The best touch in the graphics, which are drawn from above Egyptian-style (that is, in profile), is in the caves, where visibility is limited to the circle lit by a torch. When you drop in on buildings you get to admire pretty interior pictures.
Now for the brickbats. First of all, the plot is too thin. It ought to have more side paths to liven things up, and getting a musical performance as your reward for finding the harmonica a girl has lost doesn't really count as one. The most infuriating thing in the whole game is the gatekeeper monsters that halt your progress. Among them are a couple of really frustrating nasties that you have to practise killing for days on end.
Y's loses to Phantasy Star in playability, graphics and music alike, but only narrowly. If you make it past the unfair monsters and the first half, where the game tends to flatten out into mind-numbing slaughter, then the gaming pleasure is saved.
