Swords Of Twilight
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Tuskinpa kukaan.
Miestyövuosia on kulunut, sillä SOT:ssa kaikki vaikuttaa kaikkeen. On keskustelua, archonmaista tappelua, isoa karttaa, tutkittavaa, hutkittavaa. Grafiikka on osittain näyttävää, vaikkei äänimatto vakuuta.Onko siis uusi megapeli syntynyt? Eräässä mielessä kyllä.
Pohtikaapa tätä: Tyhjästä ilmasta pöllähtää joukko vastaantulijoita, jolloin kone lataa heidän kuvansa. (kahvitauko).
Keskustelu on kieltämättä hirvein tylsyys, mikä pelistä löytyy.
Taistelu sujuu joystickilla, firenappulan painallus saa pikkumiehet heiluttamaan verkkaisesti miekkaa.

Who could possibly forget the legendary games Archon and Archon II: Adept? Hardly anyone. Freefall Associates, who were responsible for the games, vanished underground after them, but has finally surfaced with its new role-playing game Swords Of Twilight.
If anyone can't guess the basic plot, then evidently they haven't played much in the way of typical fantasy games. As a novelty, three people can play at the same time, or one or two of the players can be handed over to the tender care of the Winner's Widget. The WW then sends the poor souls wandering off, usually to exactly where you'd hope they wouldn't go.
Man-years of work have gone into it, since in SOT everything affects everything. There's conversation, Archon-style fighting, a big map, stuff to scout, stuff to clout. The graphics are impressive in places, although the soundscape doesn't convince. So has a new megagame been born? In a sense, yes.
Ponder this: a bunch of strangers poofs into being out of thin air, whereupon the machine loads their picture. (coffee break). Then you get to toss out platitude 1 from a menu, the machine thinks for ten seconds or so, at which point it's time to toss out platitude 2, and so on every bloody time you run into anything. Jeez, the joy of conversation. Even if you try to take to your heels every time, if nothing else the heroes controlled by the Amiga get absorbed in some "interesting" conversation, and without them you're not going anywhere.
The conversation is, admittedly, the most horrendous tedium the game has to offer. Mostly the little men trudge across the map, which is as godawfully big as it is short on events.
Now and then you can drop into a town to get bored some more, since there you have to crack jokes at every turn with this much-vaunted conversation routine. Now and then you can open a treasure chest, which as a rule is empty. A rainbow gate takes you to a new boring world.
I played SOT for nearly five hours in the belief that a game would turn up in there somewhere too. I tramped through two or three kingdoms, and once, one lovely once, I even got to fight properly. Fighting is done with the joystick; pressing the fire button makes the little men swing their swords at a leisurely pace.
An admittedly interesting-in-principle game collapses, buried under tedium, clichés and who knows what else. Then again, Faerytale fights in the same weight class, so its fans may get something out of it. If there's a game somewhere in SOT, I can't be bothered to look for it any more.
