Xenophobe
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1990 KevätMicroProsen perustaman Microstylen maallisen taipaleen alkupätkä on ollut todellista kituuttamista. Firma taistelee kaupallisten vaikeuksien parissa, eikä todellisia hittipelejä saada myyntiin. RVF Honda ja Stunt Car Racer tuonevat hartaasti odotettuja markkoja kassaan, mutta pari hyvää peliä tuskin riittää. Niinpä myyntiin pitää äkkiä saada jotain muutakin laadukasta.
Valitettavasti sanat "äkkiä" ja "laadukas" eivät yleensä käy käsi kädessä. Xenophobesta jääkin suuhun ilkeä kiirehdityn tuotteen jälkimaku. Peli perustuu Suomessa tuntemattomaan samannimiseen kolikkopeliin, jossa kaksi pelaajaa voi yhtäaikaa tai erikseen mäiskiä Alien-elokuvasta riipaistuja avaruuden mömmöjä avaruusasemalla. Ruutu on jaettu vaakasuorassa kahtia, jolloin molempien pelaajien touhut voidaan esittää samanaikaisesti.
Pelattavuus on kyllä sanonko mistä. Typerän kontrollisysteemin oppimiseen menee niin kauan, että peliin ehtii jo kyllästyä. Etenkin jonkin esineen noukkiminen lattialta nopeasti on suorastaan mahdotonta.
1990 KevätThe opening stretch of the earthly journey of Microstyle, the company founded by MicroProse, has been a real struggle just to scrape by. The firm is battling commercial difficulties, and no real hit games are making it into the shops. RVF Honda and Stunt Car Racer will presumably bring some devoutly awaited markkas into the till, but a couple of good games are hardly enough. So something else of quality has to be got on sale, and quickly.
Unfortunately the words "quickly" and "quality" don't usually go hand in hand. And sure enough, Xenophobe leaves the nasty aftertaste of a rushed product in your mouth. The game is based on the coin-op of the same name, unknown in Finland, in which two players, together or separately, can whack space blobs lifted straight from the Alien film aboard a space station. The screen is split horizontally in two, so that both players' antics can be shown at the same time. When all is said and done, and at bottom, Xenophobe is therefore a normal and simple shoot-'em-up.
The players plod along the station's corridors, destroying as they go the eggs lying about on the floor, from which little bloblets will hatch in due course. Some of the eggs have already hatched, and every now and then the action gets distressing when you don't know which way to tear yourself. Graphically the game is so muddled that in all the bustle you can't always tell who is who. The music and sound effects, at least, have been handled with professional skill. As for the playability, it's, shall I say, from you-know-where. Learning the idiotic control system takes so long that you've time to get fed up with the game first. Picking some item up off the floor quickly, in particular, is downright impossible. While the player wrestles with the joystick, the hero standing about on screen watches the blobs make breakfast, dinner, lunch and supper of him, and the brutes even find time to enjoy their afternoon coffee in between.
Even the dimmest of readers must realise by now that I, for one, do not like Xenophobe. There is professional skill behind the code, sure, but the finishing touches have been forgotten. Xenophobe is Microstyle's, and at the same time MicroProse's, first coin-op conversion, and there's nothing to do but wish them better luck in future.
