Wayne Gretzky Hockey
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1990 KevätKaikki jääkiekon ystävät tuntevat varmasti herran nimeltä Wayne Gretzky. Sälli on rikkonut ties mitä ennätyksiä useampana vuonna peräkkäin NHL:ssä, joten on luonnollisesta että hänen mainettaan käytetään johonkin peliin. Amerikkalainen Bethesda Softworks, jonka aikaisempiin yrityksiin kuuluu amerikkalaista jalkapalloa simuloiva GridIron, palkkasi erään nimeltä mainitsemattoman softapiraatin tekemään Väinöstä pelin. Lopputulos on Wayne Gretzky Hockey.
WGH on tietääkseni ensimmäinen jääkiekkopeli, joka sisältää kaikki tärkeimmät jääkiekon säännöt paitsiosta ja kahden viivan syötöstä tusinaan erilaisia jäähyn syitä. Erilaisista taklauksista saa erimittaisia rangaistuksia, jopa.
Animaatio on todella upeaa!
Pelattavuuskin on hiottu lähes täydelliseksi. Pelaaja saa valita hiiri- ja joystick-ohjauksen väliltä. Kumpi on parempi, se on makukysymys, itse pidän joystickista enemmän.
Äänipuolikin on hoideltu kuntoon.
WGH on kevyesti paras jääkiekkopeli, mitä olen koskaan nähnyt missään tietokoneessa.
1990 KevätAll ice hockey fans are sure to know a gentleman by the name of Wayne Gretzky. The guy has broken who knows how many records several years running in the NHL, so it's only natural for that fame to be put to use in some game. The American company Bethesda Softworks, whose earlier efforts include the American football simulation GridIron, hired a certain software pirate who shall remain nameless to make a game out of Väinö. The end result is Wayne Gretzky Hockey.
WGH is, as far as I know, the first ice hockey game to contain all the most important rules of hockey, from offside and the two-line pass to a dozen different reasons for a penalty. Different kinds of checks get you penalties of different lengths, even. Everyone surely knows what ice hockey is about, so no more on that.
After the anaemic GridIron, Bethesda has really raised its game. No corners have been cut. Players get pampered right from the start, when a giant-sized Wayne Gretzky skates towards the camera and slaps the puck straight at the viewer. The animation is really superb! After a moment the start menu appears, where you can adjust, among other things, the length of the game, the game tempo, the difficulty level and whether or not there are fights in the game. Although the back of the box has a promising picture of two hockey players knocking each other's heads off, in several hours of play I haven't managed to get a single fight going.
The game also offers the option of saving and carrying on later, when you have more time. Another very handy feature is designing your own teams. Choosing 'Team Editor' from the start menu takes you to another menu, where you can set the team's name, the coach's name and the starting goalie. With a little more fiddling you then get to edit the players.
Each player has easily more than ten ratings, ranging from 0 to 9. You can change the players' names to, say, your friends' names, and best of all, you are free to change the players' ratings. The temptation to make all the players perfect and wipe the floor with the opposition without breaking a sweat is perhaps all too strong. An edited team can of course also be saved to disk.
The graphics leave little to be desired. The tiny players are surprisingly well animated for their size, and you can clearly see the little legs kicking for extra speed. As the players scoot around the rink, their skates leave tracks on the ice. The bluish ice at the opening faceoff is almost entirely white in no time at all, but during the intermission a machine buzzes onto the rink and cleans the ice.
The playability has also been honed to near perfection. The player can choose between mouse and joystick control. Which is better is a matter of taste; I myself prefer the joystick.
The sound side has been sorted out as well. When the home team's players get the puck into the opponent's defensive zone, the crowd starts up a wild cheer. Slapshots, checks and saves all produce a different digitised clunk or thump. Just hook the Amiga up to an amplifier and turn the volume up, and the atmosphere is beyond words.
WGH is easily the best ice hockey game I have ever seen on any computer. You'll have to excuse me, but I think I'll go now and see if I can finally get that fight going.
