Sehän on tietysti Super Mario Bros. Näiden mainioiden italiaanojen elo jatkuu osassa Super Mario Bros 2: Mario Madness.
Hahmojen ominaisuuksissa on selviä eroja.
Musiikki on Nintendolle poikkeuksellista, sillä ääneen on jopa loihdittu kaikua.
Ainoa pikkiriikkinen särö on pelin liian nopea vaikeutuminen.
1990 KevätNow which game could it be that has achieved almost as much fame as Pacman and Space Invaders? Why, it's Super Mario Bros, of course. The life of these splendid Italians goes on in the instalment Super Mario Bros 2: Mario Madness.
You can choose Mario or Luigi as your character, or Toad or Princess, both of whom flitted by in the previous instalment of the game. There are clear differences in the characters' abilities. Mario himself is your basic regular guy, whereas Toad is nippy but a poor jumper, the slow-moving Luigi can pull off handsome leaps and Princess can hover in place for a couple of seconds.
The game has seven varied and tantalisingly designed levels. Actually there are 21 of them, since each level is further split into three parts. The game doesn't repeat itself much, because on top of the usual platform jumping Mario climbs vines, travels on a flying carpet and digs through sand in the desert. Root vegetables yanked out of the ground will do for knocking out the sweet little critters. For want of anything better, you can jump on a monster's back, scoop it up in your arms and fling it in the faces of its fellow creatures.
By plucking tufts of grass you can find a glass vessel, and breaking it makes a door appear "behind the scenes". If you stand in the right spot, you can find an energy-boosting fly agaric and pull handfuls of coins out from under the ground. The money is needed for the fruit machine between levels, where with a bit of luck you can win extra lives. Also part of the picture are secret shortcuts, bombs for clearing a way through stone walls, and the big, nasty bosses waiting at the end of the levels.
There's nothing else to say about the graphics except that Mario looks like himself and the extremely stylised backgrounds look exactly like what the game itself hints at, namely stage scenery. The music is exceptional for Nintendo, since they have even conjured up some echo in the sound.
The only teeny-tiny crack is that the game gets difficult too quickly. You see, already somewhere towards the end of the third level you end up grinding away at the same stages for far too long. In any case SMB2 is such a many-sided and brilliantly conceived entertainment package that platform games hardly get any better than this. Or maybe they do after all, since SMB3 is said to be even better. But that's no excuse to give SMB2 a miss.
