Space Harrier

Teknisesti uusin yritys on varsin vakuuttava.

1990 KevätThe basic idea of Space Harrier is simple: a sturdy space commando runs towards the horizon, either shooting at or dodging the mass of monsters and objects advancing in the opposite direction. You can't adjust the speed, but the height you travel at, that you can.

For some reason there's Space Harrier for the sixteen-bitters by the bucketload. Elite has already made one, although it only had half the levels, with the rest arriving on a data disk. Space Harrier II is already on its way from Grandslam or Tynesoft, and now Elite is releasing a new Space Harrier I.

Technically the latest attempt is pretty convincing. The two floppies reportedly hold the whole of Space Harrier, and on the Amiga the game uses the full screen. The objects update in convincing 3D, and the playability is spot on. The sound side could have been a bit beefier.

Space Harrier's worst side, however, is the game's monotony, which in the coin-op was made up for by a seat swung about by hydraulics. Without a hinged office chair and a helpful circle of friends, this is hardly likely to work out at home.
