Rally Cross
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1990 KevätAtari ST-versiona erinomainen Super Sprint on vuosien varrella saanut varmasti kymmeniä matkijoita, mutta alkuperäinen versio on edelleen paras. Tällä kertaa vanhan kuninkaan peittoamista yrittää Anco, joka on viime aikoina petrannut hurjasti lähinnä Kick Offilla ja Kick Off Extra Timellä.
Pelin alussa pelaaja(t) valitsevat kontrollinsa.
1990 KevätSuper Sprint, excellent in its Atari ST version, has surely picked up dozens of imitators over the years, but the original version is still the best. This time the one trying to beat the old king is Anco, which has lately upped its game tremendously, mainly with Kick Off and Kick Off Extra Time.
At the start of the game the player(s) choose their controls. Up to four players can play at once, two on the joysticks and two on the keys. It certainly makes for quite a traffic jam in front of the monitor, and a squabble isn't far off either, with the players shoving each other both on screen and in real life.
After this a control system is also chosen from three different options. With the joystick, the players choose, for example, whether the fire button accelerates or does the opposite. The third option is an automatic brake that locks the servos up when the finger is lifted off the fire button. Right before the race the players also get the chance to tune their cars. Each has a certain number of points which they can add to, e.g., acceleration, tyre grip and suchlike. Once everyone has fussed about to their heart's content, the race can finally begin. If there's a full complement of four players, it can easily happen that the multitude of choices takes longer than driving a few laps round the track.
As in Super Sprint, there are several different tracks, and their difficulty rises the further into the game you get. On top of that, all sorts of junk turns up on the track and affects the course of the game.
The graphics are really colourful and finely detailed, although the cars aren't very well animated. For most of the playing time they seem to hover 10 centimetres above the track. If you can be bothered to watch the edges of the track, you'll see lots of amusing little snippets of animation there.
You can't bear to listen to the engine roar pouring out of the speakers at any great volume, it's that irritating. The playability varies a bit depending on the control method the player chooses, but the Super Sprint-style steering is of course the best. At its best Rally Cross almost reaches the level of its role model, but on the home straight it falls flat on its face on the finish line.
If you're looking for a really fun racing game of this type, buy an ST and dig up a Super Sprint for it somewhere. If the money doesn't stretch that far, Rally Cross is the Amiga's best equivalent.
