Passing Shot

"Uutta" pelissä on perspektiivin muuttuminen kesken pelin.

Jos etsit kunnon tennispeliä, odota UbiSoftin Great Courtsia.

1990 KevätPassing Shot was originally a Sega coin-op, but in keeping with the current trend even weak coin-ops get converted to home computers. It's a wonder that a company of Imageworks' calibre would fall for such a poor game. Most of the flak, however, should be sent to the address of the team that did the conversion. Teque (Thunderbirds) haven't exactly impressed with their programming skills before, and they don't impress now either.

So, what we have here is a tennis game. Besides normal singles, the game offers doubles (two humans against two computer players). What's "new" in the game is that the perspective changes in mid-play. The serve is shown from behind the player, but straight after the shot the viewing angle changes and the game is shown from directly above.

And therein lies the game's biggest minus. When the computer-controlled player flicks the ball back, the court scrolls far too slowly towards the bottom of the screen. As a result your own player comes into view too late. Since the computer always manages to place the ball skilfully over on the other side of the court, a human-controlled player has no chance at all of reaching the ball, let alone hitting it back.

The graphics won't turn the world upside down, and neither will the sound. The playability is poor and there isn't much appeal to be found, because the game is so frustratingly hard. If you're looking for a proper tennis game, wait for UbiSoft's Great Courts.
