Tennis Cup

1990 SyksyJokin aika sitten Ubisoftin Pro Tennis Tour oli tennispelien ehdotonta kärkeä, mutta toisen ranskalaisen, Loricielin, Tennis Cup antaa sille vakavan vastuksen. Tennispelien suurimpana miinuksena on ollut kaksinpelin toteuttaminen. Pro Tour Tennis on pääasiassa yhden pelaajan peli, sillä kaksi pelaajaa valittaessa toinen pelaaja joutuu koko ajan olemaan ruudun yläosassa 'piilossa'. Vaikka TC ei aivan pärjääkään PTT:lle pelattavuudessa, on siinä viimeinkin tehty kaksinpeli kunnolla.

Ruutu on jaettu Pitstop II-maisesti puolesta välistä poikki siten, että kummallakin pelaajalla on oma näkymänsä kentälle pallonhakkaajan selän takaa. Näin kummallakin pelaajalla on jatkuvasti kunnon kontrolli pelitapahtumiin.

Ainoa muu silmiinpistävä takaisku pelissä on pelaajan kontrolloinnissa oleva viive.

TC on ladattu ominaisuuksilla.

1990 SyksyA while back Ubisoft's Pro Tennis Tour was the undisputed cream of the tennis games, but Tennis Cup from another Frenchman, Loriciel, gives it serious competition. The biggest minus of tennis games has been the way the two-player game is done. Pro Tour Tennis is mainly a one-player game, since when you choose two players, the second player is stuck 'hidden' at the top of the screen the whole time. Although TC doesn't quite hold its own against PTT in playability, it has at last got the two-player game done properly.

The screen is split across the middle Pitstop II-style, so that each player has their own view of the court from behind their ball-basher's back. That way both players have proper control of the action at all times. On top of that, the screen scrolls left and right.

Still, there's something to grumble about here too. If the programmers had bothered to use the whole Amiga screen and not just the NTSC area (a slice of the screen at the bottom goes unused), the game would have been much clearer and the playability better. As things stand, you easily end up following the wrong bloke by mistake, and the ball slips between your own legs without you noticing. This problem too can be solved with practice and fierce concentration.

The only other glaring setback in the game is the lag in controlling your player. Playing against the computer, you just can't seem to get to the ball in time, because your own player first ponders for a moment before dashing off. In two-player mode I haven't noticed any such fault. Whether it's a bug or what, I don't know.

TC is loaded with features. There are five different courts, a few tournaments, the players have attributes that affect the game (you can tweak them within certain limits), and a whole 39 (!) different shots. There are nine serves, and the range of shots available to the player depends on where the opponent is standing.

There's nothing to fault in the graphics. The heads of the ball boys and umpires turn to follow the ball, and even the plastic tarpaulin at the back of the court sways when the ball hits it. When the ball thuds into the net, a fairly well animated ball boy scurries off to pick it up. The title music is nothing to write home about, but the sound effects are excellently digitised from real life. As I said, the playability could be better when playing against the computer, but as a two-player game TC is one of the most fun games ever made. Playing with a mate, the hours slip by unnoticed.

Tennis Cup is both Loriciel's best game and, taken as a whole, the best tennis game to have come before my eyes to this day.
