Moonwalker
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. 1990 KevätPlastiikkakirurginen kumiukko Michael Jackson ansaitsee oman tietokonepelin siinä missä mikä tahansa muukin rahavirtoja liikutteleva markkinailmiö. Michaelin elokuva Moonwalker tarjosi luonnollisesti oivan tilaisuuden rahastaa tietokoneistettuja Jackson-faneja.
Elokuvan juonesta olen autuaan tietämätön, mutta peliin liittyy kähinöintiä Mr Bigin joukkojen kanssa, lapsien pelastamista ja muuta vastaavaa (ei kuitenkaan kumiankan uittamista kylpyammeessa).
Pelissä on neljä osaa, joista ensimmäisessä Jacksonin on livahdettava elokuvastudioilta fanien huomaamatta. Tätä varten Mikon on pukeuduttava jänöpupuksi, mutta ensin on löydettävä puvun osat, sillä ne on ripoteltu pitkin studioaluetta. Seuraavassa osassa suunnistetaan moottoripyörällä Jacksonvilleen Mr Bigin joukkoja vältellen, sitten on vuorossa aseellinen välikohtaus Club 30:ssä ja lopuksi harhaillaan sokkeloissa etsimässä kidnapattua tyttölasta.
Jackson-fanit tietysti jo kuolaavat kuin seitsemän veljestä, mutta ikävä tuottaa pettymys, sillä Moonwalker kuuluu joka suhteessa samaan ryhmään muiden keskiharmaiden lisenssikähmintöjen kanssa. Onhan tietysti mukava seurata, kuinka nipin napin Jacksoniksi tunnistettava sprite askeltaa ruudulla ja taustalla soi "Bad". Mutta peli on pelkästään tylsä ja musiikkikin lähinnä demonstroi, miten minimaalisen melodisia Mikon hitit ovat ja miten täydellisesti ne toimivat hänen karismaattisen äänensä varassa. Kuusitoistabittisissäkään ei kannata paremmin hurrata. Graafisia eroja ei löydy kuin välianimaatioista, ja ST-versio Badista on vuoden hirvein yritys. Amiga-versio ei riko korvia, mutta siinä senkin krediitit tuli esiteltyä.
Jos välttämättä haluat kerätä Jackson-rihkamaa, niin osta ihmeessä Moonwalker, mutta muiden kannattaa vältellä sitä.
1990 KevätPlastic-surgery rubber man Michael Jackson deserves his own computer game just as much as any other market phenomenon that sets rivers of money flowing. Michael's film Moonwalker naturally offered a splendid opportunity to cash in on computerised Jackson fans.
I am blissfully ignorant of the film's plot, but the game involves scuffling with Mr Big's forces, rescuing children and other such stuff (though not floating a rubber duck in the bathtub).
The game has four parts. In the first, Jackson has to slip out of the film studios without the fans noticing. To do this Mikko has to dress up as a bunny rabbit, but first the parts of the costume have to be found, since they have been scattered all over the studio lot. In the next part you navigate by motorbike to Jacksonville, dodging Mr Big's forces, then comes an armed incident at Club 30, and finally you wander through mazes looking for a kidnapped little girl.
The Jackson fans are of course already drooling like a gang of country bumpkins, but I'm sorry to disappoint them, since Moonwalker belongs in every respect to the same group as the other middling-grey licence grabs. Sure, it's nice to watch a sprite that's only just recognisable as Jackson stepping across the screen while "Bad" plays in the background. But the game is simply boring, and even the music mostly just demonstrates how minimally melodic Mikko's hits are and how completely they depend on his charismatic voice. There's no more reason to cheer for the 16-bit versions either. The only graphical differences are in the animated interludes, and the ST version of Bad is the most horrible effort of the year. The Amiga version doesn't hurt the ears, but that's the full list of its merits too.
If you absolutely must collect Jackson junk, then by all means buy Moonwalker, but everyone else should steer clear of it.
